NGD

Hey guys.

I've picked up a few bits over the last few months that I've not posted about due to 1 thing or another, so thought I'd do a quick thread for anyone that's interested. I'll use stock photos where applicable as I haven't taken any myself yet.

1st up is the NGD that I got 2 weeks ago from the British Guitar Show a few weeks ago:

It's a 2014 model Gibson SGJ in Vintage Sunburst with Gibsons new 61' PAF style pickups. For the price (less than £380 brand new) there was no way I wasn't getting this guitar  It sounded good and plays well straight out the gig bag, and aside from needing a few sharp fret ends rounding off and a heavier set of strings it's a fine guitar. I'm thinking of swapping out the stock pickups for a combination of BKP Riff Raff/Stormy Monday/Mississippi Queen that I currently have in other guitars as part of a 'pickup shakeup' I'm planning :D

The NAD and NPD will be in another thread for anyone that's interested.

Re: NGD

you can never go wrong with the price of the gibson J models.
does she neck dive though?

There's some neck dive at the minute, but I think that may be because of the nylon strap I currently have on it. I have a wide leather strap I usually use for LP style guitars going spare so I think it'll end up on the SG full time.

Re: NGD

I think some of them may be the most toneful SG's, just for the fact they don't have a heavy finish on them, and the pickups are on rings.

Re: NGD

I bought a project SG that I had to strip and refin. I'm not sure about the plugged in tone, but acoustically its very open and alive......I just sprayed finish with no filler.

Re: NGD

Is there really a difference between the J and the regular? Not to me!

Much good Brow.

Re: NGD

Thanks guys. I've been playing it a bit more today and I'm still enjoying it.

That looks real nice and the price is a bargain, nice one bud!

Cheers Don! I like it's stripped back look, it's gonna get pretty bashed up I think! :D

Very nice!! And less than £380 you say? :naughty:

Thanks Simon. It was £379 at the show but they appear to be about £450 usually, which I don't think is bad for this guitar.

Nice looking SG. Got a shot of your's?

Thanks. I took a few pics today, but they're not particularly good I'm afraid!

Much good Brow.

Cheers!

Structurally it has the same mahogany body of a 'normal' SG but this 1 has a maple neck and there's also the complete lack of any type of lacquer finish but otherwise I think it's more or less the same.

Re: NGD

The neck humbucker is moved up closer to the fretboard too. Does that make a difference?

I honestly couldn't tell you to be honest!

I feel a bit stupid admitting this but until I checked the specs on Gibsons site to see if it was a Maple neck; I hadn't even noticed it was 24 frets :D

Re: NGD

Nice; the zebra pups make it pop. Good price too. Kinda wish they had a blank fingerboard with side dots only, but no big deal.

The neck pu is in the same place, just the 24 frets making it look that way. 22 fret SGs have the little plastic plate or p/g covering that area.

Re: NGD

Good enough. Cool one to enjoy for you. :bigok:

Yep, certainly is! I think this is going to be a main guitar for my 'old' Punk band.

Going forwards it's going to have a black covered bridge pup and either a double black or zebra neck pup.

I hadn't noticed it was missing the neck plate to be honest!

Re: NGD

Ha! I didn't notice that it was 24 frets either. I was originally wondering if Gibson was compromising neck stability for tone. Only drawback I see is if you want to add an aftermarket pickguard, which really isn't much of a drawback anyway.

Nah, I have no plans to add a scratchplate so it shouldn't be an issue.
