i bought it to be an electric slide workhorse, but it plays so damn nice and fast it seems like a shame to do that to it!
It has a nice chunky 50s style neck and hangs nice and even on the strap too!
winning!

Ive got an a259n and a PGb hanging around in my parts drawer, so they will probably go in tomorrow. I don't really need the extra grunt of the custom and i like A2 sweetness, so hopefully that should make it a pretty sweet sounding axe.

Re: NGD....

Nice score! I gotta say SGs are about the only kind of guitar where I prefer the looks of a covered hb as opposed to open coils. Might be because of all the lower level "cheap" SGs usually come open coil. Hope you enjoy it!

Re: NGD....

That A2 59n is gonna be awesome in your SG (great looking guitar, by the way).

I don't know about the PGb, however. You may love it. My preference for a great sounding and very versatile bridge pup in an SG is the Custom 8. Very solid, meaty, great mids, tight bass, present highs but not piercing/brittle (like in the stock Custom).

Re: NGD....

i do have a couple of A8 mags here...i could put one in there just to see before i desolder anything.

something ive noticed...the "in between" position sounds pretty crap. The neck pickup is the stocker gibson (490r?) which sounds pretty nice on its own. I wonder if there is some kind of phasing issue between duncan and gibson pickups? Its no big deal because i have the 59 ready to go...just wondering really.

Re: NGD....

Congrats.

And yeah. Mismatch is a problem with 490r and custom in the middle toggle position.. Had that issue 20+ years ago in my old black standard.

Re: NGD....

Awesome score! beauty! I had an
Epi G400 and put a C8 and a 59b in the neck and it was a killer guitar..

Re: NGD....

im probably the first person since the early 70s to neither play any acdc or sabbath riffs on a new sg. Hell, i haven't even stepped on an overdrive pedal yet. Early days i guess. Still getting a feel for how the wood resonates. Its very deep and clear and really sings all the way up the neck. I might save up for another one of these!

Re: NGD....

ok so in the last 24 hours its had 3 sets of pickups in it.
currently its running an a259n and a CC in the bridge. they balance up nicely and have plenty of grunt without any fizz. I know a lot of folks say a CC is no good in an SG but im pretty stoked - probably because the rounded top end is more forgiving on the scraping and clanging you sometimes get when playing slide sloppily!

Re: NGD....

You have to use your own ear as far a pups that appeal to you. Cant go by what works or doesnt for others. I personally loved a C8 in my SG, but your ears, style and amp set up may work better with the CC. Glad you are digging the guitar!
