nice sounding les paul

i was wondering.................................................
if i were to buy a les paul based on feel, playability, tone, but NOT on looks (i dont care if it looks like i just crapped it out) which are some good ones to look at?

Well, you'd have to feel it, play it and hear it to really know that Kinda subjective... why do you ask?

because i dont really like the look of les pauls and i wanted to try a good one to see what all of the fuss is about. ive tried some, but they didnt do anyhthing for me, so i wanted to see what others thought. also, i play a strat, so the feel usually isn't right on any i try, so i guess which les pauls are constructed with good material, woods, and the construction is solid.

Hmmm... well, almost anything by Gisbon will be well build and will do a decent job soundwise (especially if it has a pair of duncans in it ) To be honest, I think your issue might be that you prfer strat sounds to LP sounds, whereas lots of other people just love the Les Paul lead tone. Just go down to a guitar shop and ask to try a Gibson Les Paul Standard into, say, a marshall amp.

Well if you want a hotter Les Paul, try a Classic. A Standard is pretty much your typical Les Paul tone. Though I don't like Gibson pickups and would throw some Duncans in there.

get the plainest, most beat up Studio you can find...those are great guitars with out all the pretty stuff, and even in good shape go cheep!

I'm partial to 90's/early 2000's Gibson Les Paul Standards with the 50's (59 profile) neck.
I think 90 to now is the best era for Gibson, but that's just my opinion. Earlier than that, and the quality is spotty......they were known to be heavy, or have seams across the top.

My Lizzie ('76 Custom) looks like she's been run over by a tank and weighs nearly as much. I like 70's era Gibs, but I think I'm in the minority.

Interesting you say that... I always thought that 60s gibbys were lusted after by.. well, just about everyone... do you think today's instruments are better, or are they just more consistent?

but I would add that the LP studios from the same era (esp 91-95) are really nice too. same neck shape ... many have ebony boards ... just bail on the 498t and 490r pups and you're good 2 go!

something happened in the mid-late 90's and IMO anything under the LP standard line started to suffer ... and quality control seemed to get spotty.

todays faded series is something I'd avoid like the plague!
