Just arrived yesterday. I have the original 1st gen, and as much as I love it, it always had an issue with headroom on the 1/4" guitar input. It would clip if you looked at it wrong. I almost always used it with a DI box into the XLR connector. The 4th gen model fixes all that, plus adding some cool new features: Auto, Safe, and Air.
(The 1st gen still works as the best outboard soundcard / headphone amp for my laptop.)
Auto sets the gain for you, while Safe "rides" the gain control in case you really screw up.
AIR is a little weird. From the manual: Adds presence and harmonic drive. Whatever the hell that is. I'll have to play with it.
The 40th Anniversary edition comes in a unique drop dead gorgeous anodized blue, and includes a bunch of cool software.
Can't wait to play with this. (Internet pic since my photog skill stink.)
