Nitro finish coming off

Seems like the finish just chipped

It was fine just yesterday and I picked at this thing to see what it was and it just a tiny bit bigger

So to answer my own worry this won’t affect anything except the way it looks and my guitar will be fine, right?

Re: Nitro finish coming off

I have a LP Studio with no binding. The finish is separating where the fretboard (ebony) meets the neck wood. It doesn’t affect the playability, feel or sound of the instrument. But yeah, visually I hate how it looks. I’d like to get it fixed because I want to sell the guitar but otoh I don’t want to spend any money on it either. Lol

In your case I’d think it’s something that can be fixed, if you’re so inclined to go that route, but I wouldn’t think it going to hurt the guitar in the long run if you don’t fix it.
Think of it as a natural (real) relicing.

Re: Nitro finish coming off

that second pic is more than nitro coming off...it's an uneven surface...possible termite problem...give Terminex a call and have it checked out...

Re: Nitro finish coming off

Oh there’s a lot of finish left on it if that’s the entirety of it coming off then

Sweet! I don’t mind a little wear.

Personally, the wear is what makes it play more comfortably.

I'd just put a light amount of oil on it periodically and let it be.

Enjoy! :beerchug:

Re: Nitro finish coming off

all the tone was in those 2 flakes

dumpster it

Everyone knows the tone of a Les Paul is in the binding and pickguard, geez..........

Astro has an unusually nice example of an LP though, so just keep an eye on it. Sometimes however, trying to patch a spot of nitro makes it look far worse than it did before.

I'd just do nothing probably, unless it starts to get bigger. If anything, smoothing out the edges of the area, so it doesn't snag on anything would be my only suggestion; again, if anything.

Yes. Yours is one of the nicest examples of a Standard that I've seen on this board. We may need a good pic for reference purposes now.....

You really think it’s a looker huh?

Man forgive my ignorance but I just always thought of those models that are “up there” $$$ as being just overall great guitars

I didn’t think some could be super flame topped and others be a little more plain Jane

I had never bought a les Paul and all the ones Sweetwater were offering looked great... I now have a theory they pick out the ones they want to buy from Gibson and sell...

I never realized les Paul’s could vary so deeply within the same model

The only other guitar I’ve seen in person like mine was actually a 2017 trad.

My guitar is actually a traditional 🤫

The 2017 traditional had a much plainer top and the colors on it were very light

Mine kind of turned to a honey/light Burst type of
Thing after I started leaving it in the sunlight in the morning to harden the finish

It definitely made the brown brighter and more orangey..

I installed the slash pickups a while back and have only ever wondered about swapping them for boutique stuff... but $500 for a set of pickups is kind of crazy

I also have the 2016 explorer. Both killer guitars though my explorer keeps popping high e strings

It’s become the red headed stepchild

I tried some 2017 models when I bought the explorer

None were as good as my 2016s, no offense to anyone owning a 17.

Re: Nitro finish coming off

Yeah, for a Traditional that's even a better top, as they usually are a bit more plain. However, Gibson is so inconsistent with grading and sorting tops into the different models that you can sometimes get a top that is much nicer, like yours. What makes it nice, in my opinion, is how wide the flames are, and it's not just straight lines of flame. One will tail out but another one picks up adjacent to it. It looks more vintage because it has the black mineral streaks in it also. I really don't care for those "perfect" tops that people used to call "lawyer tops" back in the early 00's.

That top could daily be on a real burst. Anyhow, you just got a really nice top and I do think Sweetwater gets some really nice stock to choose from. Thanks for sharing again!

Plus, I really love the Slash pickups. They're a great set and I wouldn't change them for any $500 set man. They are that good, IMO..
