Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

Re: Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

Any foam style stand will work. The rubber on some stands was the culprit.

Re: Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

Has anybody used a stand that worked well with an Explorer and definitely didn’t react with nitrocellulose lacquer finish?

What about this Fender stand?

I used to use 100% cotton flannel from the fabric store with my Faded V. Is there anything that I won’t have to wrap up with aftermarket materials?

I have 2 of those stands that I use around the house. I haven’t had any issue with them affecting the finish of any of my guitars. I’ve had them for probably about a year and a half now. Good stands....

Re: Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

Not a lot of people know that an Explorer was designed to be laid face down on the floor instead of using a stand... quite revolutionary.

I just made that up.

Re: Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

If I remember correctly it was silicone rubber that was the problem.

Re: Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

You mean the rubber that wasn't rubber, but some other material?
It's vinyl. Vinyl reacts with nitro. So yeah, what he said: any foam with that black foam padding should work. Avoid the cheap ones with the ugly light-orange "rubber" on the contact points.

Re: Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

I’ve heard the black foam is the worst.
I’ve heard the light beige rubber is “surgical tubing” and safe for everything.
I’ve seen the best and worst possible characteristics attributed to the same product over and over. Manufacturer says, “Safe for nitrocellulose lacquer.” A handful of reviews say, “It turned into glue and permanently bonded with my SG.”

I am skeptical like Charlie Brown with that football.

I don’t know about the Fender stand, but I use the cheapest house brand stands from Musicians Friend and they are fine.

I have a Hercules stand (with the black foam) for my Les Paul and it's been fine. I had another cheap generic stand with black foam for my SG years ago and it was also fine. I've never heard about problems with the foam kind, it's always been the vinyl.

I ordered the Fender stand.

We’ll see.

Fender deluxe hanging guitar stands conveniently showcase your acoustic, electric or bass guitar and are durable enough for road use. Along with being portable and efficient, the stand's padded yokes are perfect for guitars with sensitive finishes, such as nitrocellulose.

Re: Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

I switched to Hercules hangers for all of my guitars and one major reason was they're safe for nitro finishes. I don't use floor stands any longer because of my little dogs, but once they're gone I'd only buy Hercules floor stands.....unless something better comes out between now and then. All the research I did for hangers led to Hercules.

Re: Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

So the Fender stand came in. The Explorer rests pretty naturally on it, and a few hours of contact failed to precipitate a chemical change.

I’ve been using mine for well over a year on all of my guitars, including some Les Pauls without any problems.

Re: Nitro-friendly stands for Explorers?

Most of my instruments have nitro finishes, and the classic Hamilton stand (which also happens to be the best designed and best built guitar stand I know of, and also one of the cheapest) has caused no problems.

I've been using one of those for my Explorer for over a decade. I bought it off the floor so I never knew exactly what it was; thanks to ItsaBass for pointing that out :bigthumb:

Worked for a Gibson dealer at one point plus have had many in Pawn shops don't trust anything with Gibson finishes long term. Just put it back in the case or deal with the damage because absolutely nothing I know of is safe with a Gibson on the finish!!!

Maybe we should cut the lining out of a Gibson case and line a stand with it.
