NMD: New Mic Day!

Last night I snagged an Audix i5 on eBay for a great price. I love the OM-2 I'm using for vocals and every review of the i5 I've read has been positive. It's shipping out to me today.

I'm finally reaching the point where the bag of stuff that was taken from my garage a few months ago is fully replaced. Just a few more small odds and ends to pick up.

Good score!

I have an I5 lying around that I bought to use live with a band that didn't work out. As I'm now unemployed (redundancy) I'm thinking about digging it out again and pairing it up with my Blue Baby Bottle for some clips :D

Re: NMD: New Mic Day!

Thats a great live mic, sounds better than the Shure mics but is still pretty durable

Re: NMD: New Mic Day!

I am unfamiliar with this one. Any chance of an OM-2/i5 side-by-side review?

I have a New Mic Day post coming up, also -- just waiting for my camera's battery to charge ... :)

Re: NMD: New Mic Day!

I will post a review of it when I get it and have time to cut some clips and listen back. The OM-2 is primarily a vocal mic. I haven't mic'd my amp up with it. Compared to the SM-58 though, for my voice the OM-2 works better. Smoother sound, doesn't need as much EQing.

Re: NMD: New Mic Day!

Hope you're not keeping all your new gear in the garage this time...

Uh. No. The only thing out there is some misc hardware and 2x12. The bag that was taken was sitting right on top of it too. It's covered so it's not obvious it is.

Re: NMD: New Mic Day!

Looks good.....Audix didn't they showed up in the 80's?
Yes, they are now an old-guard mic company, but relatively new compared to the venerables. The last 20 years have seen some truly amazing microphone companies come into existence -- Blue, Mictek, Violet, Mojave. I'm sure I'm missing a couple. We have also seen 'midline' microphone quality increase dramatically from companies like AudioTechnica which have forced companies like Neumann to bring out 'entry level' models. The ribbon revolution has given birth to companies like Cascade, who make fantastic ribbon mics at reasonable prices.

The mic arrived today. Great shape. Like brand new. What a killer deal. So I mic'd up my amp and gave a listen. First thing I noticed was how full the sound was. The lows are present yet tight, the highs perfect. The frequency range allows the full sound of the amp to come through, which I like.

I only had a chance to mic it up here at the house. Our next gig isn't until March so I won't get a chance to really hear how it is through our PA until then.

Re: NMD: New Mic Day!

Thanks for the update! Sounds like you got a killer deal.

If you ever get the chance, you should try the D2 on your guitar cab; it's voiced as a tom mic, but has a frequency bump that really works for guitar.

I looked at the D2 as well. That's the small one isn't it?

I got this i5 for $56 shipped.

Re: NMD: New Mic Day!

audix makes some great mics I use OM5 for my live vocals (i'd really like to pickup a VX5 condenser at some point for coffee shop/acoustic sets)

I love the D series drum mics (D2, D4, D6) and the i5 is a great workhorse. While they may not always be my favorite grab they usually get on the list of mics I'd go to. Heil, Sennheiser, AT, Shure, Blue, etc all make some terrific mics as well.
