NMV Marshall Guise...question

How close can I get to a JCM800 sound with a NMV Marshall, like my '73 Superlead, and a Good JCM 800 in a box Marshall style Overdrive pedal?
Reason I ask is I might like to try and sell/trade my JCM800, and keep just the Superlead.

Re: NMV Guise...question

It's my understanding that it's not just the Master Volume circuitry (if any) but how it alters the dynamics between the input and output. While I'm sure the JCM800 and SuperLead have somewhat different internals (otherwise what's the point?), the interplay of a Master Volume would be an integral factor.

That said, if you're going for a pedal, look into what was typically used with them in the late 70s/early 80s - MXR Distortion+, EH, BOSS OD-1, SuperOD, maybe one of the boutique pedals. I did see BK Butler had his own Ebay store a while back, selling the original Tube Driver pedals for about $250.
Might pick one up before he passes on, as they'll be impossible to find for a reasonable price after that.

On second thought, they were $280, not $250, and you'll have to wait until he builds more, as I just bought the 2 he had listed

Sorry, GAS. :D

You can get reasonably close with a pedal, but the response will be different. In addition to the master volume, a 2203/2204 has the first two gain stages cascaded instead of run in parallel like they are in the 1959/1987. I used to have a '73 100W Superlead with a PPIV master, and it really didn't sound like a 2203. With the channels jumped and run reasonably loud it did decent 70s rock tones, but wouldn't really get into JCM800 territory. When I wanted to play heavier stuff, I ran the amp on the edge of breakup and slammed the front end with an MXR Distortion+.

Re: NMV Marshall Guise...question

jump the channels and get a good attenuator, it wont be the same but it will ROCK!!

Re: NMV Marshall Guise...question

Its as close as..... Vanilla ice cream and Cherry Vanilla ice cream....both good...both have some similar elements..but they taste quite different.

(I am not applying the term "vanilla" here to me mean "bland" or "ordinary"...you could substitute "chocolate" and "chocolate peanut butter swirl" ice cream..)

now I am hungry.

You might want to take a look at the English Muff'n

http://www.ehx.com/products/english-muff-n

It is a tube based OD. Form factor and power requirements might bug you if you try to put it in a pedalboard, but otherwise it looks pretty cool. I have not tried it myself but the demos sounded nice.

Re: NMV Marshall Guise...question

So as others have said and I am unqualified to opine it's a combination of things. I don't have a nmv 50w or even a 20w... A lowly 18w head is the basis for my opinion (as in feel free to ignore)

The mv amps I've played are all much more compressed... For my amp there's this mod called the swank motee mod where you use a switch to go between parallel and a cascaded v1/preamp. If you have headroom left in the power amp there's a big jump in volume and the amp compresses more. It's kind of a feel thing where you really feel like everything jumps a little more.

It's not good or bad, just different. If you like fighting the amp then go with parallel but if you like feeling like greased lightning then go for the jcm800
