No difference with caps???

Maybe I just don't hear it, but I tried changing my caps to the ceramic again in the PRS and could detect no difference. Should I hear a difference while on 10? Really no audible difference to my ears with the Hovlands!

Re: No difference with caps???

So you changed cap type with the same value?

There really IS no functional difference, other than slight variations in tolerance, between cap types.

Re: No difference with caps???

Exact same value - .022 Hovland and .022 ceramic and no difference that I could hear. I'd be splitting hairs if I said I heard any difference at 5 or 10.

Re: No difference with caps???

That's why I don't fuss over small stuff like that. I'd never play my guitar if I spent so much time thinking about caps, pots, cloth braided wire, and locking tuners, and all that other nonsense! LOL

Re: No difference with caps???

Just as a quick reminder, the quality of the cap in a guitar determines the quality of the signal that you throw away . . . not the part you keep.

Sort of like having silk trash bags. ;)

True, but a higher quality cap is probably more efficient, meaning it would be less likely to throw away a bill with the junk mail :laugh2:.

Plus, you can hardly tell what pickups you've even got in your guitar, if you wear earplugs at rehearsal! haha

+1 man, I wear earplugs everywhere, things sound kinda muffled but when I'm 50 I wont be deaf. The rest of the guys in my band are already deaf.

Re: No difference with caps???

The signal in a guitar is so small, its really not a big deal what caps you use. However, in amplifiers, caps make a huge difference... as do resisitors.

True, true.

Besides, just to be on the safe side . . . I use Sprague Orange Drops in my guitars. ;)

Isn't it true that the K value of the Pot affects the @10 tone and the Cap affects the @0-9 tone?

Afterall, @10 no signal should be going through the Cap.

Eitherway, I can't see there would be much in it...

On 10, no you really shouldn't hear a difference. The capacitor value determines the shelf point above which those frequencies are sent to ground as you engage the tone control. i.e a .047 will roll off a larger range than a .022.

Actually the value of the pot influences the tone at all tone settings.

Exactly, cheap AND nice quality. :)

Yeah, sorry, I meant only the K value of the Pot affects the @10 tone i.e. the Cap effect will be negligible at this setting.
