Re: NO MIDS!!! ABSOLUTELY FRACKING NONE!

It looks to me like your tone is probably exactly the same as my tone, but upside down. Highs are painful and bass only gets drowned out by other instruments.

Re: NO MIDS!!! ABSOLUTELY FRACKING NONE!

While they're not absolutely necessary, they can help a guitar tone out and really make it sing and sustain... esp. for soloing.

You can always sculpt the mids out at the console/DAW afterwards.

Boost mids going into the amp... scoop 'em out in your DAW.

Re: NO MIDS!!! ABSOLUTELY FRACKING NONE!

^ well thank you bubba. Actually, I have one Fane, which is a mid reticent speaker, and paired with a Eminence mid heavy speaker for balance . I am clueless as how the amp functions with dialing back mids on a mid heavy speaker. My plan is now to get another Fane mid recessed speaker to pair with the other Fane for a double scoop .

Re: NO MIDS!!! ABSOLUTELY FRACKING NONE!

Some people dig that. I don't. But hey, I don't have to listen to it, either.

Re: NO MIDS!!! ABSOLUTELY FRACKING NONE!

Yeah right, tell that to Metallica..one of the greatest metal bands in history, and they had a heavily mid scooped sound..not entirely scooped, but the famous " smiley face eq" ( Mesas?).
I don't mean to make a pest of myself right now... I think it's a lot dependent on the amp , right? Marshallesque amps need Mids. Fender types ( and in IMHO Hiwatts) can be scooped to a beautiful effect.
Despite my name I am into old school classic tone, not nu/black /thrash metal, I do get into *some modern metal, but have a dedicated amp and guitar( 6505 and Zakk Wylde Epi) for that, plus, the equation obviously changes when playing with a band as said, but I am only 'bedroom' player.

Yes, the equation definitely changes between playing by one's self at bedroom levels and playing in a band. I like a scooped sound, but I don't like boomy buzzy indistinct mush. Old Metalica has more mids than it would appear at first listen. Not as much as Boston, but not as little as setting a parametric EQ at 800hz and turning it all the way down while simultaneously turning the treble and bass all the way up.

+1

If you've ever played a Mesa Mark II or Mark III, you'll know that those amps have a ton of mids when you only use the EQ knobs. They're essentially designed to do the Santana singing lead sound which requires a ton of midrange to sustain and cut. In order for chords to not turn into a muddy mess, Metallica used the graphic eq to scoop out the extra mids. John Petrucci from Dream Theater used his Mark series amps similarly. The amp was set to 'EQ Auto' which automatically engages the graphic EQ (with the infamous V setting) when on the lead channel for JP's primary rhythm sound. When he needed to play lead he simply switched the EQ off; the amp had plenty of gain so he merely needed the extra mids and volume to cut through.

The one album where Metallica actually had a completely mid-scooped guitar sound was AJFA, and numerous sources have said that they did so in order to bury the bass; essentially hazing Jason Newsted. Objectively speaking that album sounds horrible; in a recent interview one of the guys who mixed the record stated that he nearly quit the project after Lars insisted on that guitar and drum sound. If you look on youtube it's possible to find the album remixed with proper guitar EQ and audible bass and it sounds indescribably better.

Re: NO MIDS!!! ABSOLUTELY FRACKING NONE!

I think that a lot of it has to do with the way that the ear and brain process sound. A super dry scooped sound is great for bedroom levels. In the old days when all some people had were crappy amps and so so stereos, the upside down smile was always the old standby. But even a Mesa with the graphic EQ scooped has more mids than you think. And even AJFA the original mix, has more mids than the guitarist in my band wants to hear when he's playing. Which would be fine playing through a Microcube. Not so much through a Randall half stack.

That CSGuitars guy is always posting goofy "absolutes" videos,,,,,,,,,like "the HM-2 is only a usable pedal with all the knobs at max!"

He is also one of the few people to be able to get several great tones out of a stock Metal Zone.

On a gear-review youtube channel? Maybe, I don't know,,,,,,,, but getting great metalzone tones has been happening since 1991.

Re: NO MIDS!!! ABSOLUTELY FRACKING NONE!

Wow, I don't like any of the tones discussed here. Different strokes, I guess.

Re: NO MIDS!!! ABSOLUTELY FRACKING NONE!

No mids are fine if you play by yourself, the inner ego will fill up that void anyway :D
In a band setting it wont work as well, especially if you have another guitar player.

Especially if said guitar player has a Marshall.
