When you soldered the wire to the pot did you flow on just a tiny bit of solder or is there a big clump of it? Sometimes you can use way more solder than needed and it goes below the lug (where you can't see it) and it can touch the case of the pot causing it to short out. But that glob of solder is like a "cold solder joint" with the case and isn't actually soldered on so that when you lift up on the wire it also lifts up the lug, with the glob of solder, and relieves the short and lets you get sound.
If you are new to soldering, the tendency is to use way more solder than necessary. So that is a possibility.
Take your pot out and inspect the area around the lugs. See if any solder has flowed underneath the lug and touches the case.
