As some of you guys know, I bought Jeff H's Seal Modded JCM800 Combo. I love the amp, but there is a fair amount of hiss & noise, especially on the dirty channel. Would a noise gate be helpful? Will it rob tone? Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

BTW..I just had it re-tubed and biased. Theodie played it last night and he concurs with most everyone else that the noise is just a characteristic of the amp. It just drives me a bit crazy since my Orange Rocker 30 is so quiet !

Re: Noise Gate Question

I have a modded 800 with the same problem. I put a Boss NS-2 in front and it helped a lot. if you have an effects loop it will work even better. I notice no difference in tone. Just be careful how you set it. If you want it to start stop really quickly then you will lose sustain. I am happy now.

Re: Noise Gate Question

Who cares, just hit another power chord to shut it up! LOL!

All jokes aside, there is some truth to that. You played it. It is loud at idle though! Sweet amp though :)

Re: Noise Gate Question

I could care less how it sounds when it is in idle. Its when it is being played that it counts and it sounds good!

Re: Noise Gate Question

ISP Decimator!!! i had the NS2 before and the ISP now and i like the ISP better. it seems to work better and suck less tone.

+1. I've tried quite a few of them over the years and the ISP is the best, I wish I hadn't sold mine.

Re: Noise Gate Question

My noise gate works best for me infront rather then the loop (I thought the loop would be better) so make sure to experiment! (assuming it's the reissue and has a loop).

Re: Noise Gate Question

Heres another nod for the ISP. I got one a few months ago and think its great with no change in tone.

Re: Noise Gate Question

Looks like the ISP is the hands down winner. Thanks for the help fellas!
