Noise Suppressor or Hum Exterminator?

I have a Palomino V8. since it a 5 watts tube amp, its expected to be noisy. i have a Boss RV-2 (old reverb stomp box) placed in the amp's FX loop. the RV-2 is also a noisy pedal.

anyway i'm planning to buy a noise reduction pedal or maybe the Hum X grounding device? I'm on budget, more or less a hundred bucks.





what would you guys recomend me?

i'm eyeing on the Ebtech Hum X Hum Exterminator since its cheap. but is it a great gadget? anyone tried them? i also imagine that it wont affect the Boss RV-2 since it in the FX loop and that the Ebtech would only affect the amp's grounding...

anyway another question: how could i tame the Noisy RV-2? put a Noise Suppresor in series with the RV-2; having the two pedals inside the FX loop?

Noise suppressor, it'll work better for what you're trying to do. Unless you're plugging into dirty power, the grounding device won't do you much good.

yup its a insert FX loop not the send-return format. you have to use a y-cable (insert cable) to use the the FX loop.

im intersted in the NS-2? what do you use?

Noise suppressor, it'll work better for what you're trying to do. Unless you're plugging into dirty power, the grounding device won't do you much good.

yah i was sceptic about the ground Ebtech but the low price caught my attention.
what do you mean by dirty power? bad grounding issues concerning the faulty elecrical wiring? too much flourecent lighting.



i've never had a dedicated noise suppressor before. i've only tried the ones from my multi-effects as well as the built in NS of my Vox Valvetronix. it does eliminate hum but sucks tone a lot so i really didnt give much attention to N.S. before. they also eliminate hum when your doing nothing but as soon as you play, specially mild and clean, the noise comes back. i guess the the N.S. of my mulieffects as well as the the vox act kinda like a limiter or maybe behaves like one. am i right?

how does a N.S. work? cut a specific frequncy or maybe acts as limiter or a gate.

Anyway what's a good noise suppressor that is easy on the budget. i'm planning to get the Boss NS-2. i also heard it has looping or A/B capability.

also, how should i use it? in front of the amp or inside the loop? (disregarding the looping capability. pedal only as a NS)

Any and all noise supressors, gates etc will suck some tone, theres just no way around that.

Its simply not possible for one to completely isolate "noise" from "signal" and two, the "judgement" of such devices as to when a musical note stops and noise begins is often rather lacking.

I've gone through a bunch of them like the Boss, ISP etc and never was happy with any. Always changed the tone and cut into my playing dynamics and sustain.

I've found a better (and cheaper too) solution is simply to take all the steps I can to reduce noise such as making sure I've got good clean power, using good quality cables, wiring things up in a smart manner and learning to use my guitar volume knob more effectively.

You'll be surprised just how quiet you can make your rig behavior without any extra boxes and their compromises.


Additionally you might instead want to look at getting a new reverb pedal. Something like the Holy Grail sounds great and is dead quiet.


To me its smarter to put money into quality pedals that aren't noisey rather than to spend extra money on devices to try to tame noisey pedals.

Its a more solid foundation that doesn't need any "bandaids" to fix anything, if you know what I mean

ayt, the RV-2 is really noisy. you have a good point, a very practical one. my cord are also faulty now. i might as well cahnge those. thanks man, that was really enlightining. appreciated it! =)

i'm planning to just replace my RV-2 so now, i'm jsut intersted in making my amp quieter? with those Ebtech's, they never interupt the sound signal but only AC signal. this, to me is a good idea. but is it good for my small tube amp?
