I used to have one and it was more annoying having to use it than dealing with the noise it itself.

Ugly unnecessary noise is part of sounding heavy. I'll take my hiss and squeals.

I was using the noise gate that came with my G-major. I didn't realize how effective was until my g-major died. Because of that and the reverb, I'm planning to get the G-major 2 soon.
I used noise gate only with high gain stuff. With less gain it isn't needed.

I only use them when there is too much feedback or hiss due to high gain tones and only when there is no other choice.
