Noisey Strat

Wow, I forgot I actually had an account here, lol. I googled a question and it led me to this forum so here I am.

Anyway, I totally shielded one of my Strats using the 'Quieting the Beast' guide and now it's buzzing like mad, and it seems to get worse when I touch the strings.

- Cavity is completely shielded and everything tests fine for continuity.
- Pickguard is fully shielded and makes contact with cavity shielding at multiple locations, pots are connected to ground through the pickguard shield and not connected together via wires across the backs.
- I have verified that the jack is wired correctly, I used a shielded two wire conductor with the black and braid tied together at the jack end and black only at the vol. pot (red tied to jack hot lug and vol. pot middle lug).
- I put electrical tape over the shielding in the cavity where there may be contact with the 5-way and any pots that may come in contact with it.
- The wire from the trem claw is soldered directly to the shielding on the floor of the cavity and is covered with elect. tape.
- All signal grounds (pickups, jack/vol. pot) are soldered to a lug and completely covered with shrink wrap tubing.
- Pickups (SD Alnico 2 neck, DiMarzio '67 middle and SD Cool Rails bridge) are wired as they were before: the bridge wired per spec. the middle wired reversed (due to phase issues) and the neck wires reversed from the middle. Minus the loud buzz, the pickups sound fine and in phase with each other. With the Cool Rails I do have both green and bare connected together and soldered to signal ground, should the bare be attached to shield ground instead?
- Weird thing I noticed is that when the trem bar is turned around and makes contact with the plug, the buzzing stops.

Anything to look for that I may have missed before I pull the wiring apart and redo it all? I've shielded Strats before quite a few years ago and went without a hitch so I think I'm missing something or have something out of place.....

Do you have the "signal ground" and shield ground points connected together? They should be.

Ugh. In the Guitar Nutz guide that I followed, they run a 1uf/400V cap from between the vol. pot and pickguard to the lug that has all the signal grounds attached to it. I didn't feel the need to use the cap so I omitted that step, forgetting that one end of it is tied to the shield!

Thanks for pointing that out, I guarantee that is the problem.
