I want to clean the pots on my guitar becuase the volume knob makes a bunch of scrachy, noise when I turn it down.
What would be the best way going about this?
I heard there was some type of spray that you could use to clean them.
Any help at all would be great, thanks.

Re: Noisy pots....

you'll wanna get some contact cleaner from radio shack or whatever ... make sure it's got the handy lil red spay tube ..

you'll wanna get to the back of your pots for this .. so if you've got a strat your gonna need to pull the guard etc. although you can flush them from the top .. it's a bit more tricky IMO.

looking at the back of the pots ... you'll see each has 3 lugs or "leads" where the wires are connected... if you follow where those leads go into the side of the pot you'll see a gap .. and actually you can see right inside the pot .... and thats where you want to spray the contact cleaner ... flush it a bit .. let it dry out a bit and repeat as nec.

I hope that helps a little bit ~G

Re: Noisy pots....

If your guitar has a laquer finish (nitro), be carefull not to get any contact cleaner on the finish. It might eat through. Also, right after you spray, work the nobs a bit, from all the way up to all the way down (or the other way around). That way the cleaner will work better. You don't need much spray. It can get all over the guitar if you spray too much.

Another solutions would be not to turn your guitar down :burnout:

Re: Noisy pots....

Whenever a pot or switch starts making noise I replace it as soon as I can. I've had a few bad experiences with both going bad at the worst possible times. It only takes a few minutes and they don't cost much.

Re: Noisy pots....

another solution and a quick and easy fix is to rotate the volume pot back and forth at a high rate of speed. this redistributed the lube on the resistive element. good luck!!
