Non-Locking Tremolo Systems

I wondered some guitars have no locking nut although they function as floating tremolo.

1) How do they keep in tune?

2) They make bending only one tone or two tones (higher) or do they function just like regular Floyd Rose?

3) Are there more trem systems like these?

Re: Non-Locking Tremolo Systems

A correct setup without a ton of dive bombs really doesn't require a locking system.

Re: Non-Locking Tremolo Systems

I had a carvin with no locking nut. It was a huge pain in the ass trying to get it stay in tune.

Pity although I've never been a fan of Carvins.

My MIA Fender Strat has a two point tremolo system and I rarely ever have to tune it. I'm no Billy Gibbons on the string bends but I do bend them around ;) I think a lot of "tuning issue" guitars just need the correct setup (from the nut to truss rod to the saddles as well as the claw/springs)

yeah but the carvin setup was floating and used locking tuners instead of a nut. But yeah its like people say it's the pull backs which cause the biggest problems. I think if it had graphtech saddles it would have been better.

Ah I see! lol

I'm really digging roller saddles now, my new favorite bridge is a Schaller 3801.

Re: Non-Locking Tremolo Systems

My G&Ls have their Dual Fulcrum Vibrato, which is Leo Fender's improvement of the old Fender Synchronized Tremolo. I RARELY have to tune during a gig, and while I'm not doing a lot of EVH dive-bombing, it does get used quite a bit. None of my guitars have a locking nut. But I am a big fan of using the Big Bends Nut Sauce on my guitars.

My main Strat has an American 2-Post with stamped saddles, Raw Vintage springs and vintage tuners. This thing stays in tune so well it's crazy. I use Elixirs in 9-46 (slippery and smaller than the nut slots), use a ton of graphite on all points of string contact and am careful about minimizing wraps at the tuners. I don't dive bomb with it, but regular bends and everything stay amazingly in tune. Far better than my Deluxe Strat Plus with locking bridge, locking tuners and roller nut, in fact!
