Noob question from a guy playin' for 20 years

I saw the cover of some catalogue from an online store and the guy had what looked like tape wrapped around the strings above the nut (in-between the tuning posts and the nut) and also wrapped around the strings between the tail piece and the saddles of a TOM type bridge....

What purpose does that serve? I have never seen that before.

Re: Noob question from a guy playin' for 20 years

Probably breaks strings a lot and does not want the string to take his eyes out?

Naw that ain't it...it still could go flying. I have no clue unless he is getting some weird buzzes or overtones and is trying to deaden the sound.

This is believed to actually.... sh!t I dunno.:scratchch

silences any residual string vibrations in really abrupt staccato playing. i use electrical tape above the nut pretty often when recording. ive done it below the bridge as well, but it doesnt make quite as much of a difference as above the nut.

Is that really a problem? What percentage of players don't do that when they record?

What percentage of players think Gibsons/Epiphones sound crap and only play Fenders?
Each to their own! ;)

Damping of unwanted resonances.

In some applications, string damping is desirable. (i. e. on bass guitar strings to get that James Jamerson Motown sound). In other applications, it is bordering on anally retentive perfectionism.

I use a Seymourised Fender CIJ Jaguar precisely because it DOES make all of those stupid metallic overtones and noises. Each to his/her own.

:bling::bling::bling:

nah, i don't think gibsons sound like crap.

i dont mind any kind of overtone, though sometimes strings buzzing at the bridge are a pain for me.

I was suspecting something like that, thanks.

But you see my good man, that those individuals are unstable and most likely tone deaf.

I fully agree! But you know better than most that tweaking silly things on guitars is something we just NEED to do. :beerchug:

Re: Noob question from a guy playin' for 20 years

yeah, since I'm recording at the moment, I've done that as well. It dampens unwanted vibrations from those sections of string. I've got the strings above my nut wrapped in tissue paper, and I also wrapped my trem springs with tissue paper, for the same effect. It's surprising how many unwanted harmonics and frequencies get generated when they're allowed to vibrate freely.

Re: Noob question from a guy playin' for 20 years

yeah ive seen guys tie a bandana around the heardstock to "minimize vibrations" but at live shows, they just want to look good.

A badly cut nut can lead to sizzling on the open strings. This would be one way to fix it.

Re: Noob question from a guy playin' for 20 years

I'd go with the dampening theory suggested. Seems legit.
