Noob question from a guy playin' for 20 years

Re: Noob question from a guy playin' for 20 years

above the nut on some of my Fenders i get the G string ringing out when i play and it sounds awful... it sounds like an overtone constantly ringing out that even the Pickups can pick up... and it's above the nut! i have a few little rubber pick holder things that slip between the strings above the headstock that also dampen the G string from ringing out... I've also been known to pack some foam in the trem spring cavity to stop the springs from making too much noise... and on some strats i've had the pickups rattleing too... it's amazing what some guitars will vibrate with the strings...

Damping of unwanted resonances.

In some applications, string damping is desirable. (i. e. on bass guitar strings to get that James Jamerson Motown sound). In other applications, it is bordering on anally retentive perfectionism.

I use a Seymourised Fender CIJ Jaguar precisely because it DOES make all of those stupid metallic overtones and noises. Each to his/her own.

Finally we are getting somewhere. Great post.

Yeah, I saw Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis in a club years ago, and both of the them used a string damper above the nut on their ES-175s.
