Noob wiring question HSS (old StagMag pickup?)

Ok folks, nice to meet you all. Or hi from Norway that is :)

I have a guitar from early/mid 80s (norwegian Guitar Workshop) that I'm putting back into its original standard.
No master with the soldering, but manages :)

I hav no idea which single coils it is, but the humbucker seems to be a Seymore Duncan MGJ, which I have googled myself to is wired by Maricela Juarez.
Single coils are just labeled TR or 1R (see picture). If anyone have knowledge which these are, I would be grateful.

So, after some shielding paint I've tried to assemble the pickups and original electronics as best as I could.
It has 1x volume and 2x tone controls, and the last tone is also a push/pull switch for the humbucker.

I have 3 problems: (that is for now...)

1) position 4 & 5 (neck+mid &neck) does not work. Its more or less completely silent (I might hear some very low plinking). I've exchanged the white wire from the neck and middle pickup and then position 3 has the neck working just fine. So the neck pickup is working.
I suppose it can be the 5-way switch? Or would it also be possible that the wiring is wrong?

2) Tone control
The 1stTone control is not working, only the 2nd one.

3) Push/pull switch
The push/pull is not changing any sound of the humbucker. It should be like a single coil when in Pull position?

I've used these two wiring diagrams as an basis:

(for the push/pull, but its using the Volume in the diagram - I've used the same pins but on the 2nd Tone)

Fyi: You accidentally combined those two links into one. Only the diagram for the first diagram opens when clicking either link.

The last time the wiring diagrams were reworked, errors were introduced in some of them. If you have not already done so, be sure to check this topic and confirm the diagrams you are using do not have an error.

https://forum.seymourduncan.com/foru...h-this-diagram

That is a real possibility and good advice in general.

However, in this case, i've looked at the two diagrams the OP linked to, and each one is error free.

OK, so I made a very simple (in the exellent High end program Paint, yes) a scheme for how I've wired it.
If anyone can see an error of this?
(there is two wires to the output jack btw)

Hi, I see no grounding of the 3rd lugs on the pots. But it sounds like switch problem. I tend to check all 5 switch positions with a multimeter and then turn all pots before I set up the guitar.

Yes, I’ll try to change the 5way switch. After all, it’s 40 years and have probably gone through hell ;)

Any clue how a push/pull switch on a Tone pot is wired?

Some update, I've gotten the wiring correct but the pot's are busted (tried electrical cleaner as well) so I decided to change all three pots (and new 5-way switch)

Correct me if I'm wrong, usually one goes for 250k potmeters for single coils.
Since its a humbucker (the old stag-mag) I'll suppose I go for a 500k push/pull potmeter (for tone) for this one, but I'm not sure? The stagmag isnt a very "hot" humbucker but I suppose one uses 500k anyway?

So 250k for volume, 250k for tone1 and P/P 500k for tone 2?

i think thats a fine setup. 250k for the single coils and a 500k tone to squeak a little extra high end from the stagmag

The diagrams, even the Paint one, should work correctly. I can't really see what's going on in your actual wiring photos. Almost need to each component out of the guitar, or have more light/focus in the cavity.

I have a StagMag in my Jackson right now. It's actually a pretty mid-to-hot pickup but mine is an old MGJ like yours and is bright. Mine is on a 500k liberator at the moment and sounds really good. It's humbucker sound can fall in between a Distortion and a Black Winter in mine with a tone control rolled off slightly (I make that comparison because I had a Distortion and a Black Winter in just before putting this one in), in parallel coils it sounds like a Telecaster pickup, and split to one coil it's like a Strat pickup. Without a tone control, it's bright and generally a little loose, 'chewy', on the bottom end (compared to a Distortion.). Having a 250k might tame the brightness perfectly. Need to try that...
