Norlin Madness

Been refretted...is a factory second with finish checking....look what it's already up to

Now granted...it may have a great piece (errr...multiple) pieces of wood in it..

but yeesh....

This is why I've had to go import. You cannot find a decent Gibson with binding anymore new or used (barring the killer deal XSSIVE had up, which I wish I could have jumped on, and cannot believe no-one else did here) for less than $1700 :smack:

Re: Norlin Madness

Well...finding a 70's Deluxe that has not been

-routed (or hacked) for fullsize buckers

-has a mahogany neck

-has not turned green from arm wear

-has not had a headstock crack

is pretty hard to do...one of the local shops had one that looked just like that one about a month ago that sold in less that a week for $2800...

yup, $1400 shipped for my les paul was/is a killer deal, it's a great player and clean as can be....factory grovers too, a great bonus IMO. you know how damn picky i am about Gibson QC, i never would have bought it in the first place if it wasn't one of the good ones. i just got lucky that my new premium plus was a tad lighter and had a killer top and played just as well so i could let the black standard go.

my standard is now on ebay though. i wish a forum member would have bought it to give it a good home since it's a great guitar but oh well, you snooze you loose. :D

as for the norlin, bust out the router and i'll play it LOL.

You speak the truth my man! This Goldtop Deluxe is THE guitar that This WhoFan wants to own oneday!!!!!! But because of the dam things costing a mint i stick to other stuff.... But i do keep my eyes open for lp Deluxes and way too many have been routed out for humbuckers, repainted, broken headstocks, beat to snot..... I really wish i had bought a red sunburst Deluxe i saw a few years ago that had almost 0 finnish left it was so beat up.... $700 Canadian was not bad (not great either) and i could of restored it pretty good.... Good enough for me...

$1500 for a 70's les paul deluxe seems pretty reasonable to me. I've played a few and they were actually nice, I prefered them to the reissues.

Re: Norlin Madness

Seems like a good deal to me- if Gold top mini's are what you are into...

Re: Norlin Madness

There's actually plenty of very good condition norlin deluxes up on ebay these days...not routed..not mahog necks, and they ALL are going for (IMO) astronomical prices.

You can buy a brand new MF Deluxe for $1500-1700, and in the general sense they are far better guitars than most Norlins.

That Hagstrom has a bolt-on neck...not my thing...if I want singlecut bolt on I'll grab a Tele! :D

I think $1500 *is* reasonable for a really good Norlin...2 grand plus, is not.

Yeah but how could you tell if you got it on ebay?:6:

the seller sent me tons of in depth high res pics and gave me an honest review of it. i was lucky to find a very educated and helpful seller that didn't BS me. plus if it sucked i would have spun around and sold it ASAP or returned it (he would have let me) the day i got it. i've bought a few guitars that you guys never knew i owned that went right back or got sold real fast :D i only keep the stuff that i like, no need in keeping junk. there are some very good dealers on ebay that honestly sell good guitars...then there is junk. you just have to read the feedback and talk/e-mail the seller and see how they are.

i got my premium plus les paul off a high end (non authorized) gibson "dealer" (i guess you can call him) on ebay and it's mind blowing, killer wood quality and a kick ass player! it honestly stacks up with the R series stuff without a doubt in terms of wood quality all over and playability. i've never seen a standard premium plus or regular standard with as dark and even grain of a rosewood board as mine. heck it's better than most of the R series and Murphey's i've had my hands on and seen pics of. plus the top is a mind blowing flame and the back of the body wood has killer grain patterns also. i just got damn lucky and scored a killer! go look at the pics of it in the link of my sig, they speak for it.

The 70's market for Gibson is the next logical step for collectotrs to be buying guitars now that the 50's and 60's ar emostly untouchable.

The Deluxe's are odd little beasts, so I think they tend to be mroe notable that way. Especially if someone hasn't routed it for a full-size humbucker.

I spent a grand for my 73' a few years ago, and at the time it was a decent price. I had to spend a few hundred more on a re-fret to make it playable, but for the money it's a great sounding and playing instrument.

That and it filled that need I had for a guitar from the year I was born.

I prefer the new Deluxe Reissues over the vintage 70's ones.. my 76 is not the perfect Deluxe that i wished for.... But there is better years and features i want from the 70's Deluxes then my 76... I bought my Deluxe when i was kid because of being a huge Pete Townshend fan that was the guitar i had to have...

I still want a few early 70's Deluxes if i can ever afford them.... it's a fantasy but i'd love 2 red sunbursts and 2 goldtops....

Re: Norlin Madness

Personally, I wouldn't pay more than a grand for a Norlin Deluxe, I'd be willing to pay more for a reissue.

The reissues seem to be a much nicer LP

Yes but they have a different sound.
That very well may be true, but overall, Gibson has been using better wood for the past 15 years than they did for the previous 20.

They have a whole different feel too.... my original 76 LP is a much different feeling guitar then the new Reissues... but the reissues are nice LP's.... i'd like a few 70's models and a few reissues if i won some serious cash.... fantasy
