<Norm McDonald Voice>Gibson!</Voice>

I am attracted to $1k-$2k Gibsons on clearance. (Okay, maybe low twos, given the inflation.) I am not the customer for their $3-$5k+ offerings, so I dont feel like I am seeing better guitars for 1/4 the price of the Gibsons I am seriously looking at.

I totally get it.

I dont think they even look good, unless the guitar is ten feet awat.

Good point, I never even thought about that before. But now that you mentioned it, I couldn't agree more. On most of my builds with neck binding, I cut off the fret tangs so the fret crowns extend to the edge of the fretboard. Now I just realized that this was as much an esthetic thing as it was for playability.

But there are still really great guitars for half that price...at least half of the $2000 (you can't get much better than $1000). I think I mentioned that most of the Gibsons I own, I also bought on sale or clearance. Only a few were full price. One of my favorites is a Zebrawood LP. Only a few hundred were made, but I got it on sale for right around $2000 if I remember correctly (it was 10-15 years ago).

That was a really cool series. They had a bunch of exotic tops right?

Doc, if you wanted great guitar with the Les Paul formula right now, what would you choose?

The binding nibs look like something that was left to cut costs, then touted as an extravagant feature. Given a choice, I’ll skip the binding altogether. The less plastic on the neck the better.

I assume you mean the LP body shape and the 2 bucker/4 control layout. That's a good question, but since I already have a good amount of LPs and since I make custom guitars which I feel are much better instruments in every way, I really haven't had the slightest desire to even see what's available in LP form.
