Not Gibson Dirty Fingers...

Good evening! I just bought a cheap Epiphone Studio Dot on Reverb, as it was advertised to have upgraded Gibson Dirty Fingers pups...not so much. Does anyone have an idea of what these might be? They look pretty generic...~15k dcr for the bridge and 7.75k for the neck...

Definitely not Dirty Fingers because they have no logo, the wrong polepieces, and the wrong baseplate. Even if you like the guitar, I would complain on Reverb. You would get at the least a partial refund and get down to the bottom of whether it was an honest mistake or intentional. While there are a lot of scammers out there, I wouldn't put it past someone to forget what was in a guitar.

Those are just cheapie Asian pickups.

I mean, if they sound good, they sound good, but they're certainly not very valuable.

I reached out to the kid on Reverb, who genuinely thought that they were legit Gibson pups, because that's what the guy on eBay told him when he bought them several years ago. The price on the guitar was fair, so I'm not busting his chops, I was just hoping to have a couple of extra interesting pups in parts my drawer. Oh, well...

20% of the world's population think it is just fine and dandy to lie their faces off to the other 80%.
It's regrettable, but what are you gonna do?

I have those same pups, (with chrome covers). They came out of my EPI LP. PATB-1's in there now.

Even if the kid is not lying in thinking they were Gibson pickups, I would ask for partial refund as it's not the product you bought.

Well, based on what I see, I think they are a Bridge pickup and a Neck pickup.

But definitely not DF's. And on that note - that is on you. DF's have double screw heads and say "Dirty Fingers" on them.

That said - do the right thing, tell the OP about the error, get it reduced by the cost of some DF's or whatever seems fair. If that doesn't work, scorched earth them at every point possible.

And - before we go crazy...no matter what they are - how do they sound?

They sound above average. The guitar itself is in good shape, and was a very reasonable price, so I'll probably help my son's girlfriend make something fun with it. I don't think the kids was trying to rip me off, I assume he was just flogging it so he could buy his next toy, which I wholeheartedly encourage! And, yes, I should've looked closer at the pups, but those would've just been the icing on the cake... I'm calling no harm, no foul on this one...

I'll just say that, while they didn't sound great, they definitely exceeded my expectations for cheap pups, good overall tone but not much clarity or separation...
