Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

You just grab it, pick it up, and walk. Maybe do some pushups every now and then or go to the gym sometimes so that 100lbs isn't so intimidating.

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

I can see Orange or ENGL 4x12 owners struggling with the weight.

Not really. Honestly, that furniture dolly works better for that cab than I think casters would. Plus the tone is usually better when the cab is sitting right on the floor.

As for lifting and such... bandmates help get it on to elevated stages and up short stairs. I can get it in and out of my Civic's trunk myself. It's all about proper lifting (legs, not back) and maintaining a little muscle. I'm not even in that good shape and I can handle it.

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

4x12 fits into the trunk of my '09 Ford Fusion just fine. I have casters off my main one but will most likely be putting new ones on soon. Always get someone to help lift up to the stage etc, no matter what your age... That's what band mates are for!

As for stairs...well, either have someone help or (would recommend you have a cab cover for this) flip it on its side and walk it down the stairs holding the handle, it will just slide down, won't bounce of each step as if you were pulling it behind you. As for going up, well you need a hand there for sure

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

I used to sqeeze my Marshall 1960B into the back seat of my Hyundai Elantra and haul it back and forth to gigs. Wheels do most of the work, but lifting it on and off stage by myself is probably part of the reason that I've had two back surgeries. Now I'd most definitely get help to lift it. Back then, I was in too much of a hurry and didn't have time to wait around for one of the other band members to come help.

When lifting solo, sliding downstairs will be easier (if covered or with carpet). I've lived in 2nd floor apartments most of my life. Going up is easy, just lift it for a couple of stairs at a time, stop to rest as needed. A second person always makes it manageable.

Sliding up is easier than lifting.

It could be worse, ie, ... Ampeg 810

Yup, know this to be true. That's why I opted for a SVT 410HLF cab for my bass rig lol.

My Marshall 1960A sits on a roller cart when it has to be moved, otherwise, it just stays in my studio. It has casters on it, because I am way too old to be lugging it around....

Call us back in 20 or so years, you might have a change of heart.

I just had to shove my (circa 95) Carvin 4x12 back up into my attic this morning. Sort of like pushing it up a ladder. Not fun.

My wife had that car, you're right it did get good mileage.

Deadlifts and squats... ;)

Didn't realize a Fusion would fit one! Cool!

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

It hurts just thinking about it. While I gave up my 4x12 in my 20s, if I had one these days, I'd pay someone to move it. My gear has gotten lighter as I get older, and there is less of it.

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

PFDarkside - It does! If there's casters its a tight fit for sure, but it can do it. I simply won't buy a car that can't fit a 4x12 in the trunk.

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

They are designed to be moved by two people. With one person on each side using the grab handles they are surprisingly easy to handle. But if you can't get somebody to lend a hand it is not handy at all. In fact one person trying to do it without help is risking injury.

I have put my 4x12 into a hatch back Ford Mustang-but not by my self. There are some things in life that require two people. Doing it yourself is not as good.

Yeah, big Buicks are great for 4x12s and they get 30 mpg on the highway.

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

I'll never forget playing a basement show for some punks with an old school house with narrow stairs two flights down with my feet sunburned so bad they would glow in the dark. I had a 2x12 within the month. By the time I hit 30 my big mesa 4x12 was getting pretty tough to man handle all by my lonesome and I'm a pretty big ol' boy. After that we loaded both cabs into the trailer and if there were stairs the 4x12 stayed put. Casters and no stairs meant a 3/4 stack for the extra face blasting factor. They suck to move, but every once in a while the satisfaction of standing there and letting all those speakers rip, full blast, is the best thing on the planet.

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

So in all seriousness, how do you move one with out roadies and a tour van?

I pick it up.

If I have to go up/down stairs I either bear hug it (oversized Mesa), or I grab it with one hand (Marshall sized).

Can't do the hug if the stairs are too narrow like mine. Mine are steep and narrow with rails on both sides just to make it even worse.
My eventual solution was to buy another for downstairs/travel.(OK, more of an excuse than a solution lol)

& a bit of this???

Sorry, where I live we fix everything with chainsaws and Duct Tape, LOL!!!

Re: Not joking... How do you move a 4x12 cab?

Seriously disappointed that google failed to turn up a video of someone launching a 4x12 with a trebuchet.

Oh, and if I was seriously forced to move one, handtruck or just no.

30 seconds in is the stairs, 57 seconds in is how I deal with them.

Yeah that's how I do it as well,,,,,,,no hugging lol.
My stairs are much worse than that though,,,,,narrower, steeper, rails on both sides and a left turn at the top with side banisters in the way,,,,,they reeeaaally suck!
It's the turn at the top that really kills. Old country home.

You must be tall as hell if that's an oversized.
