Not thrilled with my V30 anymore

I always thought the low end on my Rivera Suprema was a little loose and can get real woofy and muddy with alot of gain on. Does anyone else find this to be a common trait of this speaker? I've tried different tube combinations over the years with no real improvement in that respect. Recently I bought a Rivera 2x12 cab that has some type of Eminence speakers in it and it sounds great. I was playing just through that without the amp speaker for the last few weeks because of an impedence mismatch. I grabbed a Weber Z matcher and hooked the amp speaker back up and could really hear the difference now. Should I try to find out whats in the cab and get one for the amp too or would that not necassarily do the trick? The amp and cab are both closed back.

Is that a real Celestion Vintage 30 in there? The bass response should not be loose and muddy with a real V-30. Some players feel that the V-30 isn't bassy enough...so for it to have to much bass or sound muddy is not typical. The two 12 speaker bottem should sound "bigger" than a single 12 in an open back cab. If you put one of those speakers in you combo amp it wouldn't sound like it does in the speaker bottem. The Celestion G12H-30 has more mids and more bottem than the Vintage 30...you might like one of those. Lew

It is a closed back amp but I've had it open and it appeared to be V30, at least I remember reading that. Are there look-a-likes? From all I've read about them I agree with what youre saying too. Thats why for a while now I tried things like different tubes ,pickups, pickup heights , settings. The tone knobs on this amp have a very dramatic effect on the sound ,just a little turn makes big change.Thats nice for versatilty but tough to nail some tones down quickly. Basically the bass is on 2-3 on both channels and the mids and highs are in the 4-7 range. It all sounds really good until you give it alot of gain. I'm sure I probably just need to keep fine tuning the EQ . Its just after plugging into that cab and it sounding so much better it made me question the speaker. For now I'll just run it without it anyway, I dont need that much volume in my basement with just me and a drummer
Maybe the amp wants to be played louder than I'm playing it and teh speaker would perform differently then but its pretty dang loud on just 2-3 now and can easily keep up with the drums!

Ok , its been awhile since I lasted posted on this and have been thinking more about it. My first post isnt probably as accurate as to how I feel about it now. I described it a loose and muddy but I think now its actually just harsh and loud. As I adjust the eq to get what I'm looking for out of it is when it seems to get out of control. I wonder if its because of the closed back? Maybe that makes it all a little too focused in front and not as full or open sounding. Would opening the back up help smooth it out and maybe bring the perceived volume down?

IMO the V30 is an acquired taste, I don't like them by themselves, but when paired with an H30 sounds great!

I have a 2x12 closed back Dr. Z "Z-Best" cab with my Dr. Z head and I LOVE the tone out of that cabinet. It gives me a very tight and focused sound and my overdrive/distortion tones are AMAZING. But to each their own. I'm not looking for a lot of low end so I guess it suits me a little better.

Harsh and loud? How about squawky and middy? that sounds like a V30 to me. I like em for some applications but honking and loud is a V30. Put one of those other speakers in your amp. I bet you'll like it and then just get another.

That's how I feel about 1x12 combos in general. Running more speakers tends to help to fill in the bottom end and smooth things out.

Opening the back up will make the amp louder and sound less focused. In general open backs give a nicer clean tone and closed backs a better crunch.

I know a 1x12 wont sound like a 2x12 cab and thats fine mostly. I just run the cab which is plenty enough for me anyway. I would just like to find a speaker thats gets me closer to that feel so I could just grab the amp and go sometimes w/o the cab. I may try opening the back but I think you may be right and the crunch will take it hard. The more I think about it I may need to try moving it. I've always had it up on a stand for easy access but maybe I should put that bad boy down on the floor and a little farther away from me. Maybe even just some beam blockers.

I use those 2 speakers in a 2x12. I like it.
