I've been fooling around with gear for weeks ... latest messing aroung wiht pickups. Anyway, I decided to make some music. This clip is a reggae-ish tune using:
  • G&L Legacy ... stock pickups ... mid-brg notch about 5 Treb/8 bass
  • Brown Note D'Lite 22/33 with 5881 tubes on OD setting
  • Parallel cabs 1x12 Celestion G-1265 + 2x10 Emi 10516
  • Yamaha Bass thru Fender Bassman
  • Jamstix 2 for the drums
  • Using Sennheiser e609 mics thru Bluetube preamp

Re: Notch In Time

You're a class act man! Tone is solid. Liked it a lot. Do you mind explaining a little about your Bluetube preamp?

Re: Notch In Time

Thanks ... the Bluetube preamp is one of the <$200 stereo mic preamps. I use it in recording (vocals, acoustic, amps) and even use it when playing live (amp). I got mine used for about $100.

Looks like this:

It simply raises the mic signal slightly before it goes to the soundcard on my PC. I don't use the tube distortion that it has ... it's not really tube amplification. When running live I can select the level of each of my speakers in the send. Of course a good sound man could mix the sound ... but I'm playing that seriously any more. The 2x10 Emi's have sort of a Fender sound while the 1x12 Celestion G1265 has more of a Marshall flavor. That mix works at the PC, as well.

Re: Notch In Time

Gorgeous tones Ken...just the sort of sounds to chill in my yard with a cold beer!!!!

Re: Notch In Time

Jeeze thats some good tonage man. Absolutely love your sound, the beat sounds crisp as well. Very well done. Big thumbs up

Re: Notch In Time

Thanks ... I'm really enjoying the Brown Note ... I built it myself (other posts here talk about that) but it has some sweet stuff inside. The Legacy (Strat) is the guitar I struggle with the most with this amp. So I've spent some time working on it ... pickups and settings. Still having trouble improving the original guitar's performance with it. Fralin 9.5k bridge ... the Areas ... it's back in it's original configuration ... with some noise on 1-3-5 settings right now.

Re: Notch In Time

Am I reading that correctly you say you built an amp yourself

Yes ... but it's a kit of parts ... which makes it easier. But here's the link for my build. I loved doing it and I learned a ton of stuff. It took about 3 days to get the grin off my face when I strummed the strings the first time. :) Plus you can get the kit for about 40% of what it costs new ... which is substantial. But it's a serious amp for sure.

Re: Notch In Time

Thats some serious sh@t. I just wouldnt have the will power to do that i dont think. A few years back I really wanted to build my own guitar but that project slipped away cos I'm generally too lazy to do it. Maybe one day I will.

That amp looks really cool tho, props to you for going thru with it. I just wish I had the same sort of stamina.

Re: Notch In Time

An amp project is next on my list of things to build. I had a big enough grin when I finished my Tele project, so who knows how big it would be on the completion of an amp project!!

Re: Notch In Time

thanks for the feedback about both the amp and the clip.

I was somewhat pleased with the stock Legacy pickups after I put them back in ... spent some time on heights and balance. I was somewhat disappointed in the new Area 58-58-61 set. I wasn't sure that I hadn't talked myself into liking the stock pups just because I had been working on this for a while. It's the only guitar that I had not really hooked up with the new Brown Note amp.

Re: Notch In Time

I think it's a case of getting used to the pickups and the wiring in the Legacy. There's quite a bit of difference from standard "Strat".

Re: Notch In Time

Man, that was some really good stuff! I loved the tone, and the playing is really, really cool.

Re: Notch In Time

Well all of this makes me feel better that I am actually closing in on the solution for this guitar. The clip is only the middle/bridge notch but all 5 pickup selections seem closer to me now. The new pickup adjustments are centered around dropping an already thin bridge pickup a little lower ... I think I'm on to something. :)
