Nothing Shocking!!

Hello all,
I just got through listening to Jane's Addiction's Nothing Shocking.
I am kinda digging Dave's tone on this album. I know he's used PRS guitars for a while but what amp's did he use, especially for his crunchy tone?
Just currious.

Re: Nothing Shocking!!

I believe that was well before his stint with PRS.

At that time I think he was an Ibanez endorsee.

Re: Nothing Shocking!!

He used to talk in Ritual era interviews about using Marshall JCM900's (yes 900's, though I think he used 800's during the NS era).

He used Ibanez and Gibson Les Paul's (I've seen a few pics of him with LP's). By 1990 he was on his PRS kick.

He always professed a liking for Boss Ds1 (dist) and DD3 (delay) pedals.

I am a HUGE Jane's fan.

when I listen to Triple X, it really sounds like a JCM800 or JCM800 w/ DS1 to me.

These days I think Dave uses the Bogner Uberschall a lot.

When I saw them two years ago it was all Marshall. Those may have been dummy cabs/heads though, so I could be wrong.

Re: Nothing Shocking!!

I was thinking of maybe looking into picking up an amp specifically for dirt!! I dig the cleans and light overdrive on my Mark IV, and even the lead channel. But I that Marshall Krunch is pretty damned sexy!!!!
Maybe I should keep my eyes out for a JCM800....
I was thinking of a JTM45, but I don't really need clean tones from this AMP, just glorious rich Krunch!
Maybe I should look into some of the Peavey Gear as well.

Re: Nothing Shocking!!

I have several magazines from the early 1990s and he's always pictured with some sort of Ibanez or a Les Paul. He does mention using JCM900s in a few spots as well.

These days he's being featured in ads for PRS guitars and Marshall Mode Four amps.

Re: Nothing Shocking!!

I have see a few pics from that era, and he used jcm 900s. He was still using them when he made his instructional video in the rhcp era. I think the ibanes he was using was a RG with the HSH pickup config, but I am unsure what pups he uses. From the intervies I have read over the years he is not really a gear freak. he tends to keep things rather simple.

Re: Nothing Shocking!!

I probably wouldn't be agear freak either if I had Carmen Electra to go home to........ Shoot..... if i had Carmen Electra.... I'd probably never leave the bedroom......

I know he used Parker guitars for a while, but probably moreso when he was with Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Peppers was mostly Strat from what i recall....Custom Shop axes.

Re: Nothing Shocking!!

I remember a fairly in-depth gear interview with him, and he said it was RGs and LPs until his gear got stolen. They get replaced by PRS, then he switches to Strats (Fender CS, and a Modulous), Parkers "for a couple acoustic songs", and back to PRS w/ Jane's and solo.

I've always heard him talk about using JCM900s, Mode 4s, Boss DD3s (2 set for different delays), and Boss Turbo Distortions.

Re: Nothing Shocking!!

Yup, it was RGs and JCM 900s all the way back then, still the same amps to my knowledge. Boss Turbo Distortion and DD-3.

Re: Nothing Shocking!!

There's NO way in HELL that those JCM900s are stock. Stock JCM900s are probably one of the worst sounding amps ever. Not that Dave's tone is the BEST, but its pretty good on those albums.

His LP Custom had a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge. I specifically recall that.

He had some prototype ibanez's for a while that were gold, tele-like in shape, and with a floyd. He also played some bright yellow RGs as well.

You can distinctly hear the Turbo Distortion on + mode on the solo for been cought stealing. Real thick and nasally.

but yeah...those JCM900's have GOT to be modded in some way. I wonder how much he got paid to endorse the Mode Four. Ugh. Terrible amp.

Kudos to him for using Bogner Ubershalls now. THERES a real amplifier.

You guys ARE MIXING UP ERAS

Nothing's shocking came out in 87-88 and Triple X in 86

JCM900's weren't around til they did Ritual and the Lola tours - 1990-1991

I think if you go to Boss's website they have more info on his rig. He's a Boss person.

Thanks for that very cool!!!!
I have always wondered about the Boss pedals, I mean most guys around here are Boutique junkies and are talking bout pedals that start at $200 on up.....
So I get a little weirded about putting a $50 pedal in my signal chain.
I guess as with everything tonal, I'll let my own ears be my guide.
