i always played guitar, and im now looking for a bass.

i want something with a fat, low attack, undefined tone. (i hate basses that sound twangy!!)

think electronic and ambient music, morcheeba, portishead, and house records.

i also like the bass in some coldplay (songs like god put a smile upon your face, daylight just blow me away)

the guy plays a jazz bass, but ive also heard crappy twangy jazz basses (see roger waters for instance)

what kind of bass im i looking for? (cheap amplifier recomendation would be welcome too!!)

Re: now what bass do i need?

first off roger waters plays a p-bass with a pick near the bridge, hence the plucky tone he gets. I would suggest something with a P/J setup. Ibanez and yamaha make some solid basses for the money. Thier low end stuff is actually quite good. or find a good squire p-bass special. Were it me i would go with Duncan Vintage P/Classic Stack Jazz. I installed the Vintage P Vintage Jazz in a friends squire P-bass special and frankly it sounded darn close to my other friends 62 Pbass. I say go classic stack instead for hum cancelling.

I Owned 2 Yamaha RBX170 the ones that go for 179 bucks new, they have an agathis body, which sounds quite good, and its very light and very very comfortable to play, they have good necks on them, and are 24fret if one feels inclined to use it, personally i use the 24th fret as a marker for when i slap on the high strings and that makes it ring at a harmonic as well as the root, kinda cool did it on accedent lol. Anyway there is my suggestion

Re: now what bass do i need?

I play a P-Bass knockoff and it sounds awesome, full, clear.

I got mine for $0 from my dad, but if mine can sound good, probably about anything off the rack will do it

Re: now what bass do i need?

i have a olp sting ray copy and it is pretty good for what you describe. if you want fat, undefined, low attack i say get an epiphone eb0

Re: now what bass do i need?

I think what we're all trying to say is a) it has more to do with your amp and how you play than the bass guitar itself and b) everyone knows all basses sound the same :lmao:

FTW.

Fat, undefined, low attack.

You want to have a pickup mounted as far towards the neck as you can get it. You want a huge pickup with a gazillion winds on it. You want a bridge that doesn't offer too much coupling with the body. You want a body made of mahogany or some similar variant.

My EB-0:

For whatever it's worth- be careful what you ask for, the EB-0 gives you "fat, undefined and low attack" and not much more.

Re: now what bass do i need?

Peavey. Get an old MIA Foundationb with Superferrite pickups. Best cheap bass out there.

+1 for PV, but I'd recommend a T-40...35" scale, and a sweepable coil split tone control for any sound between single coil(CW) and full HB(CCW)...gutteral lows and highs that never twang...tough as %&$*...you can drive nails with it and still be in tune for the gig.

The 35" scale makes it a knuckle cracker for the first few days, but if you can deal, the tone kicks much @$$.

Cheapy bass amp?...SWR Working Man's 12 or 15.

Ah to have my old T-40 in red back again, I should go find one!!!

2 nice cheap basses and I do mean cheap.

Canvas CVB20 Vintage - sort of an LP bass with a P-Bass neck, MIC but really well made, use the p-bass pups not the J-pups, you might want to drop in SD QP's in plce of the stockers but for under $300 you got a real nice bass.

Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass - it has the Seth Lover style humbucking bass pup in it. I have played a few and short of a real good setup they were fine for the cost of beans!

The Line6 Bass amps are very good and give you some room to dial in a few different type of sounds other wise the new Acoustic stuff is fantastic for the price but look for some older Acoustic bass rigs they can usually be had for a song the B320 was my fave.

Re: now what bass do i need?

You'll want something with a short scale. One of those SG basses will do the trick for those styles of music.

Re: now what bass do i need?

First of all, you'll need a set of flatwounds. ;)
