Nabbed an elderly Marshall 9001 valve pre-amp rack unit with matching remote pedal. Going to require some TLC before it will be fit to be seen.

The previous owner left one Ruby Tubes 7025 as V1 and two Russian-looking ECC83s as V2 and V3. (Almost certainly all from the same factory.)

I really enjoy the Lead channel with the EQ engaged but find the Rhythm 1 channel insipid.

Does anyone have suggestions for valve substitutions, please?

Re: NPAD: Marshall 9001

For the gain stages, I would try Tung Sol reissue 12AX7s if you like plenty of brightness or Mullard reissue 12AX7s if you don't. Overall, they are similar sounding tubes, the main difference being how bright the top end is. for buffers & such, I just use JJ 12AX7s.

Thank you for your suggestions.

My first move will be to remove the NOS Mullard from my Blackstar HT-5 and try that.

I really like the five-band EQ of the 9001. In my opinion, it is on a par with the ol' MESA/Boogie Graphic EQ. What a pity that Marshall never saw fit to install this tone network in a head or combo.

OH, I was speaking of the reissues, but since you have NOS Mullards I would definitely try that first. :)
