I'll admit to being perpetually unsatisfied with my pedalboard. I don't think that makes me any different from anyone here.
I've had a Revv G4 for about a year and a half and a Friedman Small Box pedal for a while longer than that, and neither was quite scratching my itch for a boosted JCM800 tone. The G4 is a sledgehammer. A true weapon of mass destruction. I was looking for something that punches, but more surgical than the sonic beating (but in a musical way) the G4 tends to provide.
So I went back to Revv because of the quality of the build and the quality of the tones and got a G3 Anniversary Edition pedal. I have the guitar coming into it from my tuner into a compressor that I only use for cleans then through my modulation effects into the effects loop return of my Origin 50H through a Greenback-loaded 2x12.
I've had a couple of days to play around with it, and once again, I'm quite impressed. I have never played through any amplification device that so accurately translates what I'm doing with the pick to the speakers. It's unbelievably dynamic. Its voice is much more mid-focused than the G4 and suits what I think I'm going for better than the G4. I don't think there's any way to get it to sound flubby, even though I don't want a ton of bass anyway. It's full but doesn't force its way into focus. I don't think it can dial in a Recto big-bass thing, if that's what you're after. The G4 can.
The differences in the aggression switch positions are pretty drastic. Off sounds great, but I like the little bit of hair the blue aggression mode adds. When I get to red, though, it boosts the gain a bit too much, and there is more gain available than I think I could ever make sound musical. It also puts the noise into uncontrollable territory, so I don't have much use for it. Not a problem.
I think blue aggression is where I'm going to live. And the lead voice is perfect. It just sits exactly where it should in the mix and sustains forever. I just released a note from before I went to bed last night to write this post. I thought I'd hate the purple knobs, but after a couple of days, I think the pedal looks pretty great.
