NPD - Blackety, black, black

I just pulled this out of the mailbox. Hopefully, I can pop it in my black SG tomorrow and make it even blacker.

It is in but was not as plug-and-play as the regular Black Winter in the Strat. That guitar I slapped in the pickup, and it was roaring. I need to play with the pickup height with this a bit more when I am done working today. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great, but I can tell it needs to be dialed in a bit to get it perfect.

Thanks Dave. I got it dialed in it was as simple as dropping the mids on the amp a bit, and it sounds great. I also fiddled with the pickup height a bit. The Gibson 490 in the neck now sounds muffled now in comparison. I just ordered a blackened neck to go in the guitar, it should be here Monday.

Yeah, when I first got my Tribute, the first combo I tried in it was regular Black Winter/490R, and it wasn't a good match at all.

Let us know how you like the BBW-N! It's been ages since I've hade a BW-N, but I remember really liking it.

I will definitely report back. I think I am going to throw the 490R in my Tele neck. The Maxon S70 I have in there now really wants to live in the bridge of a solid top guitar.

That 490R should work great in a Tele neck. Didn't Andy Summers have something similar?

That's a great-looking SG. It is aging gracefully. It'll look great with the matching Neck Pickup (and most importantly the sound will match)

But I've gotta say I love the mean look of the blacked out bridge pickup mixed with the old-school neck pickup!

I was gonna say, that there is no way you can't get the neck one in there, too.

I got it in. The output is around 25% of what it should be. I just had the 490 in there, so I know it is not the pots or caps. I am heading to practice, so I will hook it up to the meter and direct to the jack tomorrow to see what is going on.

Yeah...sumthin's up.

Yep. This is bizarro. It seems to be the tone pot. I went direct to jack, and the pickup was fine. I jumped from the VOL to the jack, and that worked. I then jumped from the tone pot terminal to the jack, which worked. I do not know how a pot I never touched could fail during a pickup install.

I actually think the Black Winter neck would make a great bridge pickup for some. It has all of the characteristics of the bridge but just a little less. It obviously has a bit less output. I also found the mids to be slightly less aggressive. The awesome touch sensitivity was still present, and the awesome grind the bridge pickup has. If someone is looking for a mid-forward bridge pickup but the Black Winter bridge is too much, I would definitely suggest trying the BW neck in the bridge.

As a set they play off each other nicely very balanced and are super full in the middle position. I was getting some Sabbathy tones this afternoon and some cool doom tones out of the neck. I have not played the guitar clean yet, but maybe tomorrow. I also want to give it a run in my Fender Excelsior. Hot pickups push that amp to a nice British Invasion type of breakup. I get some Kinks and Who mojo out of that amp with my Dimebucker.
