Thanks to fellow forumite Tune-O-Matic! :bigok:

Traded a pair of pickups to get these:

Never tried the Seth's before. I've been thinking about trying some lower-output 'buckers and these came up as a trade. Decided to go for it. I have some extra magnets hanging around, so some swaps will be in order. :rawk: Interested to see how they handle some gain. lol

Not sure if you can see the fuzzy label, but the bridge is actually 5% hotter than stock, and the neck is 3% under stock. So, the bridge is around 8.5k and the neck is about 7.1k.

Re: NPD! 'Custom' SD Seth Lovers

Sounds like a great pair. I'd love to have that bridge model, bet it sounds super.

Give us some sound clips when you get a chance, and a review of how you like 'em.

Re: NPD! 'Custom' SD Seth Lovers

Don't change the magnets. Seymour and Seth were rarely wrong about anything when it comes to tone.

You've got a great set of pickups. And they do rock if you rock and your amp rocks.

Re: NPD! 'Custom' SD Seth Lovers

^ +1.

They're bound to sound great with the A2 mags that are already in them. If they don't rock you the way they are, I'd be willing to take them, or at least that Seth bridge, off of your hands.

I agree 100% with gearjonser here. Why not try them as is first. Seths are perhaps my favorite Duncan buckers. I love the fat, woody, open tones you can get with Seths and the fact they are unpotted seems to add to the tonal complexity. I never had a problem with squeel or feedback when using gain.....just great, inspiring tone. Congrats and I think you're goin to enjoy them.

Re: NPD! 'Custom' SD Seth Lovers

Oh, I'm definitely going to put them through the paces "as is" for a while. And when I shake all the rust off from lack of playing, I'll try to record a clip or two! :D

Re: NPD! 'Custom' SD Seth Lovers

Hi,
It is hard to chime in as such an obvious underdog here, especially the Duncan crowd, as I must kiss some behind and allow that this Duncan group is the smartest, best Forum on the web. But I must, as a fellow guitar player, and at risk of losing respect, tell you that I did have a real PAF and after talking to famous winder MJ I have purchased 4 Seths and added an A5 mag to get the sound that matched my PAF. I even had one made in the custom shop with reverse zebra and an A5 mag. So if you want to, although everyone I think has told you not to, and I respect them all, an A5 would not hurt to try, gave a little more edge and went from about 7.8 to about 8.2 dk.
Thanks, and I respect Seth L. as much as the next guy, but I had to add the A5 to match my PAF.

This ok and a legitimate thought but keep in mind that PAF's are very inconsistent. While the A5 matched your PAF it may not match his expectations. So while its not a bad suggestion it certaintly isnt something he needs to run out and do. Just as an FYI most PAF's actually came with A4's not A5's

But I have no idea why your pickup would change resistance when you swapped mags. That makes no sense at all I can only guess the measurements werent very accurate due to temperature or other variations.

One: Never consider yourself an underdog. We are all here to learn. Two: The dudes on this forum (while some may have strong opinions for their own tone and playability) have lot of info to help everyone achieve their own personal tones. everyone here rules. :) Plus, the A5 and A5U have been considerations of mine for this pickup.

Re: NPD! 'Custom' SD Seth Lovers

Maybe this is the right time and certainly the right set to try my tried-and-true mag combo: the A3/UOA5 aka "Vintage Whisperer"™.

I think you're going to love it.

Re: NPD! 'Custom' SD Seth Lovers

teleblooz; I'm having a dilemma, I just purchased a set of Lovers for a Yamaha SA2100 which previously had Carvin Holdsworth's. I am concerned about the squeal or feedback. I don't play loud, like 2-5 an a 100 watt amp (Yamaha DG80-112). I also use a APH-1N & PGB on my solid body which I have grown to love. You said that you've not experienced any problems with the Seth Lovers, at what levels are you performing, and do you use a lot of high gain saturation? I REALLY want these to be the PU's, I think they would match the wood and tone of this fine guitar. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Re: NPD! 'Custom' SD Seth Lovers

I'm not teleblooz, but after have installed in excess of fifty Seth Lover sets, modded and not, most played through cranked 50-W plexies and JTMs, adding my own 335s, hosting Electric City Pickups RD-59 Hybrid set, an UOA5 modded Antiquity set and an A3/UOA5 modded Seth Lover set, all non-potted, I can safely tell you to expect a very musical controlled feedback, just no uncontrolled squealing, unless you're using too much gain standing too close to the speakers. Which you can also expect from a 1-watter as well. ;)

HTH,

+1. I have a few sets of Seths, and haven't changed the mags in any of them, which is unusual for me. They're great 'as is.' Try them a while first before you think about changing mags.

Re: NPD! 'Custom' SD Seth Lovers

With the Seths I was using, I tried them with a Jet City JCA50H that I was modding for a friend. I made the preamp circuit identical to that of a Soldano SLO, which is a pretty high-gain amp. I had no problems with the gain up around 5-6. At loud (gigging) volumes, I only had issues when I would face the speakers. They hold together rather well, especially considering the Gibson 57 classics were a lot more prone to squeal under gain.
