NPD: EHX Soul Food

JB_From_Hell

Jomo's Nimions
Just picked up a Soul Food. Haven't had much time with it, but so far I think I like it. I had my eyes on a J Rockett Archer, but life, kids, car repair, blah blah blah... for less than a third of the price of an Archer, the Soul Food sounds pretty good.

As I'd hoped, it seems to play really well after the Green Rhino.

Incidentally, the guy who recently said he's "not really into pedals" now has six various dirt pedals on the floor. The guy I bought it from also had a Barber LTD I may go back for.

Re: NPD: EHX Soul Food

That's a close enough facsimilie.
Not on my board right now but I have a Tone Bakery Crème Brulee. It's like a smoother "klone". $99.
My pedal board is all dirt pedals except for a Dispatch Master (Reverb and Delay), tuner and ABY switcher. I haven't played out in years. My board is for fun. And fun is a few boosts and OD's with a fuzz thrown in. :bigthumb:

Enjoy your Soul Food.

Re: NPD: EHX Soul Food

The Soul Food is a great Klon Klone pedal...especially for the money.

Works best with a tube amp that is already cranked up and distorting on its own tho.

Doesn’t work as well through an amp that’s set for a clean tone, IMO. The amp has to be breaking up a little on its own to get the most out of the Klon circuit.

I’m a fan of the Klon and now have a Klon KTR, after having owned four clones (including a Soul Food) and liking them too.

Interesting tidbit: the Soul Food has an internal true/buffered bypass switch.

Re: NPD: EHX Soul Food

I saw the switch. Mine is set to true bypass.

Lew, I’m looking forward to opening up my Super and trying it. It sounds good with the amp on 3, so I can’t wait to hear 5 or 6.

What’s that movie? It’s Going To Be Loud! :)

That’s why with the exception of my AC30 and Mustang 3, all of my tube amps are 20 watts or less.

The guy who sold me the Soul Food had a crap load of cool gear, including a 17 watt Goodsell. I didn't have a lot of time today, but sometime in the near future I'm going back over with the '62 LP, and I'm looking forward to trying that amp, and all the rest of the stuff.

Agreed...I had one at one point and felt that it did a great job as a clean boost or as a pedal with just a hint of hair on it hitting a dirty or verge of dirty amp.
As a stand alone OD, probably not my first choice.

Funny, there was a time when it was my only overdrive pedal. What I use it for now is as a mostly clean boost to hit my distortion pedals harder. I also used it as a killswitch for a time.

You know, I’ve never though to use a pedal as a killswitch!!
Ingenious!!
