NPD: Flanger Content

Re: NPD: Flanger Content

Yup, that's the setting here's his board from 1986....

Pretty much the same settings can be seen in the 1984 pic too but the '86 shot is clearer.

As for Never Know Why, the flanger setting is the same. From the pedal board pics I've seen his flanger settings are pretty much the same in 1984 and 1986. For the delay, well, that's not a delay. That's Jake's "fake echo" two hand sliding technique I guess you'd call it. I ripped this off from him ages ago lol, one of my favorite things he does, Dimebag also ripped it off and did it backwards. You can see it in this video a bit after 30 seconds. There's no delay to make that delay like sounds in Never Know Why, through the whole song it's the two hand technique of sliding back from the same note....

This guy plays it correct...

Now You See It (Now You Don't) is another song he uses the technique in during the solo. You can see good shots of it in new Red Dragon Cartel vids like this...

In the intro on Never Know Why there's clearly some delay in addition to the flange. You can hear it and even see that he's not doing the fake delay trick in that live vid. That is a cool trick. Never tried it myself.

Since we're kinda snowed/iced in here (it doesn't take much to do that here lol), I'm gonna mess with it later. :)

Re: NPD: Flanger Content

Wait, you mean the intro as in the "spooky" sounding volume swell stuff? Yeah there's a delay on that. Either the silver, red or white pedal on his board in that pic will be the setting. Not sure which of the 3 delays he had on his board was set for that particular sound. I thought we were talking the actual guts of the song, my mistake. I kinda glazed over the word "intro" and was talking about the meat and potatoes of the song, whoops. The main riff is what I was talking about that's all fake echo and then G chords timed to match up with the earlier fake echo giving the illusion of a delay on. This is one reason (of many) why I love Jake's playing and writing and he's my favorite guitarist. Outside the box originality.

You can use the fake echo all over. Jake used it when playing Iron Man with Ozzy and it sounds cool as hell there. I love all his little fills all over the song. He does it at around 2:50...

It's a fun trick, just play a note, slide it back, tap that same first note with the right hand and slide it back as you bring the left hand back around to tap that same first note again and slide it back, just a revolving cycle as many times as you want.

Re: NPD: Flanger Content

Yeah, the spooky intro is what I'm referring too. That's such a cool intro. On that same concert that Iron Man is from he has that so dialed in. That's one of my fav songs from that album.

I played with those settings a bit today and really dig it. It's pretty much a perfect setting for a lot of stuff. It works with Barracuda even though it's not the perfect setting for it. It still works great though.

I'll have to work on that technique. Could use a few new tricks in my playing. :)

Yeah, for some reason I glazed over the fact that you were referring to that part, no idea why. It's gotta be one of the 3 delay pedals he had on his board back then DM2, DD2 or DSD2 that was set to that delay time for the intro swells just not sure which one.

Jake's flanger setting is the perfect jack of all trades setting as you found out, it works for nearly everything while not being perfect it does 'cuda and unchained good enough and still works for riffs or lead playing. My BF2 has been set to his settings since I got it with no plans to change. Although I did try the Ronni Letekro trick where you set the manual knob all the way up and all other knobs at 0 and you get a mid boost/honk that's kind of fun. It gets this tone...

You can hear the "honk" in Ronni's tone from the flanger since he never shuts it off and it's the key to his tone.

Yes shaggy it's spooky LOL. Didn't know how else to describe it and it's an Ozzy song so "spooky" seemed to be fitting lol.

Re: NPD: Flanger Content

I was waiting for someone to mention the LeTekro trick. A simple lick of Jake's I stole is basically: hammer and pull off a minor 3rd, repeat with other hand using middle and pinky doing the same thing. If tapping is your thing.....

Re: NPD: Flanger Content

I used to use my old Boss Phaser with all the knobs off for that honky Vandenberg/LeTekro half cocked wah thing. Worked great.
