New end of year guitar

I haven’t posted a lot of late, busy with work and rehearsing with 2 bands, playing guitar in one and bass or guitar in the other. I’ve had a few guitars and basses through the year but this one may well be my last guitar. Yeah I know we all say it, and recently it’s been Ace with that beautiful Green LP but this one is different and if you have the time to read this I’ll explain why.

I actually owned this guitar 21 years ago having lent a lot of money from my late mum at the time. Well a few months after owning this my sister broke the news to our family that my mum had stage 4 cancer, as you can imagine we were all gutted and in shock for a while. So knowing that mum was nearing end of life I sold the guitar to pay off my debt, I just felt it was the right thing to do. She wasn’t happy about it but my conscience was clear as I knew that as I have 3 sibblings any inheritance should be equally shared… all fair and square. It was actually my boss who bought it so I got what I paid and could fulfil my obligation.

Over the years since mums passing I have joking asked my boss several times to let me have it back because of the history more than anything else and I whilst I don’t normally name guitars I did with this one…. I gave it my mums middle name. More on that later, you see why.

A few weeks ago I was chatting to my boss and I helped him source an original ‘63 fiesta red Strat and he’s a Strat player and wanted a pre-cbs. Once he got it (fabulous guitar) he asked me if I was serious about having the guitar back as he’d only played it a handful of times in all these years and was grateful for my hard work and effort and for helping get his bucket list guitar. Well I didn’t mess around and we’ve worked out a deal, it’s worth a lot more now than it was then, and I have it back in my hands.

The guitar is a 1992 LP R9 that was 1 of 10 (could be 15??) that was made for NAMM ‘92 to launch the Historic series. When I sold it to my boss there was some provenance in addition to a Gibson certificate but he has “lost” the accompanying document. However, that means nothing to me as I have the certificate and I’ve got my guitar back. I haven’t messed around with pick ups or anything as yet bye cause it sounds great as it is ( I have another LP with a Brobucker/ WLH neck) and this one sounds real old school, open and airy… almost single coil like if you like. Another nice detail for me which was a surprise is that whilst it’s obviously not a birth year guitar (I’m an old git now) but we share the same birth day 5th April… ‘65 for me and ‘92 for the guitar. The has a real 3D quality, it shimmers and moves around and it’s pretty light for a LP.

Ref the name of the guitar, I wasn’t going to post this as it’s close to Aces new guitar name, but my mums middle name is Iris.

If you’re still here thanks for reading, sorry if it’s bored you sh!tless….. So with out further ado, my LP R9
I’ll have to get some better pics that I can resize as it won’t let me upload.

AWESOME story bro! Please tell me you wear oven miss when playing it, because, dat flame!

Dude - If that were an epiphone Use, the story alone wins the NGD for the year. But 1 of 10 92 R9s? I rarely say this - but I wouldn't touch a thing. Sounds like it was built perfectly, and now is back where it belongs.

Many thanks Ace, it means a lot. I’m sat here waiting to bring the New Year in with the guitar on my lap sipping some Macallan whiskey thinking of my dear mum.

That guitar is stunning and what a story it has attached to it, nice way to end the year as well

Morning to y’all and Happy New Year from the UK, hope you’re still up and letting the new year in!

Thanks for the replies, this guitar is all about the connection and not what it is and I’m just grateful to have it back.

@ Mincer - It is full a gloss nitro finish.

I’ll get some daylight pics when the weather picks up.

Wow...
