I got the Full Shred neck a couple of months ago in order to replace my Distortion Neck in my Charvel SoCal 2014. The DD neck is not a bad pickup, it was just too much punchy and thick sounding and I really like a more open and versatile sound out of the neck position as I had been a HSS strat guy since 1998. I finally got the chance to play with it at rehearsal yesterday and boy what a big difference, it is not just a nice open sounding pickup for leads (which I enjoyed a lot) but IMHO a nice pickup for clean and crunchy rhythm. It was "covers" rehearsal so we played from reggae to metal (no, I not play djent) and this pickup has that single coil-ish quality to it that I have liked from the STK-S6 in the neck position I am currently using (again) in my HSS strat, specially when clean and light crunch, when using high gain it is when this pickup really differentiates and does not sound that much if a single coil-ish tone to me but close enough to enjoy it. And I also added an SSL-1 in the middle, I got a usable quack at of the in between with auto split of the duncan shred.
I know, playing alone in your bedroom you may say "it does not sound that versatile to me", but in the mix of the band with the drums, bass and the singer the Duncan Distortion bridge and the Full Shred neck combo was good and versatile enough for me. I sill have the old JB/Jazz set that I had used in my old strat, I did not try the Jazz because I remember it was missing something to enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed the Full Shred neck so far. Maybe I should try the JB/Jazz combo in the Charvel, that strat is Poplar+Rosewood while the Charvel is Alder+Maple.
