NPD: Joyo Dyna Compressor (that sort of compresses)

Re: NPD: Joyo Dyna Compressor (that sort of compresses)

So now I'm on the hunt for a truly good compressor that has cosmetic issues or that people overlook because it looks dorky or has the "wrong" name on the label.
Check out the Visual Sound Comp 66

Dude, $225 is a pretty big jump from $21! I appreciate the reco but I am on a pretty tight budget.
I believe I will spend some time on YouTube. There are so many options, but no way for me to audition any of them before buying.
Hi Dave,
As you say, the Joyo Dyna-Comp is 1/2 lame...and good compressors tend to be pricey..+$185..
I recommend that you find a TC Electronics HyperGravity @ $129 new or a Philosopher's Rock@ $149 new
Personally, I feel the TC unit will be more than enough satisfaction...it has a blend knob so you can get exactly the amount you need for solos or to leave the effect on 100% of the time.

You can get an Xotic SP Compressor on reverb/eBay used for around $110. They are fantastic units.

Re: NPD: Joyo Dyna Compressor (that sort of compresses)

Unfortunately I was on a trip and didn't see these last two replies until yesterday. I've already bought an MXR Super Comp. I need to spend some more time playing with it to find my ideal settings but it seems to do what I want it to do. Same controls as the Joyo (output, attack, sustain) but it has more volume boost and WAY more compression on tap.

I do wish I understood why compressors get louder as you crank up the sustain, though. I've read quite a bit about how they work on the 'net and I would have guessed it would be the other way around? Both of these things hit maximum output with the sustain dimed. The difference is, the MXR still puts out above unity even with it backed way off.

Re: NPD: Joyo Dyna Compressor (that sort of compresses)

The short answer to your question is:
Because Sustain is not an actual compressor setting.

I know, but that's what it's labelled on the Joyo! It's actually labelled "Sensitivity" on the MXR, which I guess partially answers my question...if "sensitivity" means input gain?

I assumed it was actually a "release" control, since they both have a separate attack control. But I still don't see why adding compression (or extending the release time, or whatever it is this knob is actually doing) would increase the volume output noticeably? I would expect the opposite: more compression = lower output volume? It's just confusing to my tiny little brain and the one-paragraph instructions in the MXR "manual" don't help at all. It just says "Sets the compression ratio (highest sensitivity is maximum compression)" and "The Sensitivity controls the dynamic range of compression," neither one of which really tells me what it's actually doing. I can hear pretty easily what happens when it's turned, but don't know how/why it's having that effect.

Raising the compression ratio boosts the output signal??

Re: NPD: Joyo Dyna Compressor (that sort of compresses)

It can; as can increasing the make up gain, which is what I suspect is happening. It's far more complicated than that.
Quick example: a ratio of 3:1 = for every 3dB over threshold on the INPUT. you are getting 1dB of OUTPUT. However, you may actually be getting 10dB of gain reduction. So, make up gain is applied to raise the lowest parts of the signal by 10dB.

If your compressor has automatic make up gain, which most pedals do, the more gain reduction you apply, the more make up gain is applied ... higher overall perceived level. QED.

Clearer, I hope...

The MXR is a very good unit...BUT no blend knob...You have now discovered ( the part about boosting too much) exactly why having a blend knob really helps get more real world usage out of a compressor...If you get tired of the MXR, you can always flip it for what you have in it, so give it some time to see if it becomes more useable and if it doesn't go for the TC.

That is my plan. I got a good deal on the MXR, could probably make a few bucks selling it. Right now I have a bid on a Philosopher's Tone that is selling below market value on eBay, so this may be an ongoing saga...

Re: NPD: Joyo Dyna Compressor (that sort of compresses)

If you score a PT, your saga may be over. You have to spend a lot more $$ to get to the next level after that one.

I have spent some time with the MXR and I am happy with it. And it glows in the dark! But it looks like I might actually get the PT. Someone listed another one cheap and all the bidding on "mine" stopped dead. Win or lose, I will be happy.

Re: NPD: Joyo Dyna Compressor (that sort of compresses)

A good, cheap compressor is the Danelectro Mini Surf & Turf, which sounds really great. I used one for years (before I got a Vise Grip) to boost my signal. These days I am using boosts more than compressors, but I still like them a lot.
