NPD - King of Tone

hydro

Prayin' to Cheeses
I almost feel like I am cheating with this thing...

It seems to just give me MORE of what I want a tube screamer for; very articulate, but not squishy except in the hi-gain mode (which is great in its own right). It is brighter than I expected but I realized that the tone is calibrated at zero, not at noon. Can't wait to try this out on the big rig tomorrow. I waited a long time to get this thing but it is really nice, really versatile. Stacking both channels is awesome.

Re: NPD - King of Tone

Nice. :) Wait list or forum/ebay?

I love mine, I leave one side on all the time, setting it to just past breakup, then use the volume knob to control tone. Other side to stack for more gain for leads/grittier rhythms.

Re: NPD - King of Tone

Wait list. He has a good system for it and it seems fair.

I think it's cool that he could just ebay them himself and make more money, but instead he "rations" them to try to keep it fair so that regular schmoes like me can get one. I've bought other gear from him and have always been impressed with the quality and the service. I have had modded TS-9 and EHX memory man from him and they are great pedals with well done mods.

Re: NPD - King of Tone

Remember that there is a presence trimpot on the inside - for total highs.

The tone control on the outside is really a mids to upper mids control.

Re: NPD - King of Tone

The one I got had the presence at max.......VERY raspy. To try and counter this I turned the tone down (as I didn't know about the trimpot at that time), which sucked the mids giving me all highs and no body.

Neeless to say I didn't use the pedal much. Later I read a thread about the pedal, and heard about the trimpot. Once I'd taken it off max the pedal was incredible - the nice Marshall Bluesbreaker type tone I'd always heard about.

Re: NPD - King of Tone

It is pretty crispy but man it sounds great! I need to mess with it over the weekend and see if I can find the sweet spot.

What I love about it is there's no squoosh. It keeps the dynamics and the pop while also adding some sustain. Really nice.

Re: NPD - King of Tone

Crap... just what I need... another pedal to GAS over. My two large boards are over-flowing already.

Re: NPD - King of Tone

There seems to be two mainstream pedals out there that are venerated- the Tim and the KoT. The Tim seems to be a true boost that adds nothing but some transpaent gain and grit to your amp that does not color your guitars sound, and remains fiarly dynamic to a true amp like feel and response, but the Kot from what i have been able to gather, adds some chraracter/colour to the tone in a amp like dynamic musical way, while also remaining tube like in feel..Aside form that is the budget but stalwart OCD.
Besides that, peoppe wanna swear by many others, and I'm sure these days there are some others.
LOts of screamer variqantsb, and thy are about some of the most revered amp like pedals, but you have to have the volume up on yoor amp to engage the great dynamcis of those pedals.
