NPD – Line 6 POD Pro Rack Mount

New "old-like-new" Processor Day. My dad bought the POD HD Pro and gave me his old rack mount. He keeps everything in immaculate condition so this unit is like new. The expression pedal (long one with 2 pedals) is not pictured but works like a champ. Really dig the tones!

Anyone a fan of Line 6 stuff? The tones are unreal but while it can really hit some cool tubey tones it can't recreate the "response" I get with a tube amp. Agree/disagree?

Some stuff is spot-on with Line 6. Some isn't.

I've found best results bypassing the cabinet simulation, into a power amp and a guitar cabinet.

My dad has an old AX2 that sounded awesome but was having issues...turned off the cabinet simulation and it fixed it.

I tend to create the same sounds/tones with Line 6 stuff when I was using an old POD 2.0, ditched it for a Boss GT and then for a Tube amp with pedals. This POD definitely has a lot to offer and is better for apartment life because of my headphones ;)

Re: NPD – Line 6 POD Pro Rack Mount

Congrats!

I used to have a POD XT bean, but it died on me. I miss it, TBH. :(

For me, Line 6 stuff usually has TONS of models to go through, and in the end, only a few are useable, really, but the ones that turn out useable are usually gems. I loved the 5150 and the Triple Rectifier models and the Marshall w/V30's, the Marshall with Greenbacks, and the Rectifier cab models in my old POD XT. For a while I even used the whole bean as a boost (I bypassed everything but a model of the tube screamer), and it worked pretty well!

I also liked the analog and tape delay models.

The recorded tones were also pretty damn convincing for its time.

Haven't had much experience with the stuff that came before the XT, but the XT had a couple of models which supposedly came from the POD 2.0 (the Treadplate and the Modern High Gain or something of the sort), and they were pretty good, IIRC!

I have a Pod X3, its great for practice, serviceable to good for band stuff, depending on what you are doing. (Supporting a singer, great... Lead, featured guitarist, not as great) Reverbs and delays sound really good, some of the modulations are pretty good too. I feel like the amps and pedals are a little over characaturized and compressed. I feel like the Blackface Deluxe and Tube Screamer model sounds like SRV... No matter what guitar or pickup is used. But for apartment use, practicing, etc. the sounds are pretty good and definitely do what you need them to do!

Tons and tons of models in there, have fun!

Dude, so sorry about the XT bailing out on ya!

I totally agree on tons of options with just a few that are usable–that's why I left the modeling/processor stuff for the real deal tube amp with pedals to get my tone.

I remember using the Modern High Gain for several of my tones on the 2.0 (also used the Rectifier.)

Good stuff for sure!

Absolutely great for practice! I can defiantly agree on many sounding compressed. I felt like I kept creating the same tones over and over again...my cleans, crunch, drive and high gain channels were all sounding the same...like I was spinning my wheels. Switched to a tube amp with pedals the combos blew my mind.

Definitely enjoy having the processor now–can practice past midnight without worrying about getting a letter from the Apartment manager. lol (haven't had any issues so far, we are all pretty respectful of eachother...gets pretty quiet around 8/9ppm.)

I use a POD HD400 for my main sound and love a lot of things about it... but it definitely has its limitations. I love having all the options, but I hate using banks to get to them, so I have mine set up for just two banks (all using the same amp, Fender "Blackface") with varying levels of distortion/overdrive. I found it easier to use a standalone compressor and to take modulation effects, along with adding a little extra EQ, from my old RPx400 (also an amp modeler, but I have it going "direct"). So essentially, I'm using my POD as an amp simulator & overdrive pedal(s).

+1 to all the comments about having only a few usable tones, and another +1 about the usable ones being VERY usable! I find it to be awesome for recording (because of all the options) and also for "bedroom/headphone" playing (we have a baby grandson living with us, so have to play/practice softly a fair amount of the time).

I even like it live... I go ahead and use the cabinet simulation into my amp (a Crate... I know!:barf:) because it livens up my sound substantially. The only thing I don't like is the dropout that I get when switching from one preset to another. It's very quick, but you hear it if you don't plan ahead carefully.

Have fun with the options... they're great for getting the creative juices flowing, and you may even find a few things that are useable for you live!

Oh yeah... and HAPPY NP DAY!!

I have a Line 6 Pocket POD that's great for sitting around and playing with through headphones or computer speakers. I always loved my AX2/212's until they somewhat died. I also have a Bass POD as well that love, and always use on my recordings.

Thanks!

And yeah, the "banks" is a pain when you are use to just turning pedals on/off BUT its not the most terrible thing in the world. lol When I used one live I did the same thing–two banks more of the Fender and Marshall channels with A being completely clean to D being high gain and B/C being various drives...worked well but I love the dynamics of a real tube amp.

But as mentioned before, definitely some awesome usable tones!

I've always wanted to try a Bass Pod! I had a Digitech thing for Bass and loved the tones you get with the Bass BUT I haven't owned a Bass in a long time. lol

On your AX2s have you tried turning off the Cabinet Simulator? That fixed my dad's AX2!

Re: NPD – Line 6 POD Pro Rack Mount

I guess there's a Bassman model in there? Might work just fine for a bass.

The dynamics thing is tricky, i think of it as listening to a cd rather than an amp & it starts to get okay to listen & play, not to mention the unusual amount of gain available in some amp models that the compression effect kicks in early. Combined with the okish AD-DA converters, dynamics are hard to notice. Sounds good though, probably used on so many private & pro studios back in the day.

I believe the "Tweed Blues" was based off of a '59 Fender Bassman and the "Line 6 Twang" was based off of the Fender Deluxe and Bassman...could be wrong on that. lol

Yeah, some of the amp models offers ridiculous amount of gain and some are a whole lot louder than the others. From an "audience" perspective majority of listeners could care less if I used a tube amp or a modeling system...but I like how my tube amp responds when I play, don't get that out of the processor. But you are right, a great system and used quite a bit back in the day. lol

I've been using the pod pro since it came out in this rack set up.

Some killer sounds in there.

Re: NPD – Line 6 POD Pro Rack Mount

I'm not sure how the signal chain flow works on the Pro, but on the XT, I remember I got a very interesting tone by running a clean amp model (I liked the AC-30), bypassing the cab simulation, and then adding the compressor squashing pretty hard (around -20dB threshold) AFTER the amp sim, and then I seasoned it with a hint of the delay+mod model thingy, a hint of reverb, and/or a hint of subtle chorus. Somehow I got TONS of sparkle and chime that I did not get with any of the cab sims engaged. That tone killed for sparkly, pristine, hi-fi modern clean arpeggiated chords.

Re: NPD – Line 6 POD Pro Rack Mount

I have a POD HD 500 that I play through a Vox amp. I like the distortion patches that I've made and I find that you can use some of the blocks the exact same way you would use the pedals. Like I just beefed up my main distortion patch with a Tube screamer with the level all the way up and the gain all the way down. Sounds killer.

Hmm, I don't know if the old POD can allow for something like that. But that sounds awesome! To me, the cleans are very sterile, sound good but don't have that chime that my Hot Rod Deluxe gets.

Sweet dude! I think the distortion is the best thing the POD offers, IMO.

Re: NPD – Line 6 POD Pro Rack Mount

I like their soldano & JCM800 (and sometimes rectifier) sounds. There's like one clean one I like. The rest are mostly distant and useless but the soldano works for most rock/metal stuff well. I never did a side-by-side, but I generally like the sounds outta my gsp better.

For gain I mainly use the Marshall JMP1 in my photo.
