NPD: MXR Micro Flanger

The DD-2 on my board seemed kind of redundant lately, while I've also been wanting additional modulation that plays nice with a dirty amp. Cue an MXR Flanger, except that it won't really fit on my board, and I don't have enough available power supply outputs for 18V.

I've owned both an original with the attached power cord, and an early 2000s reissue. I sold them both over 15 years ago, so I don't remember too clearly though they seemed to be pretty closed matched with the reissue having a better bypass. I'd heard that these Micro Flangers sound great, so I decided to take the plunge after listening to a few demos. In the end I'm glad I did; it nails the Siamese Dream lead sound when used with my Homebrew UFO & Univibe. There's a bunch of other cool sounds in there as well. Like many of the reviews mentioned, I really don't miss the 'manual' and 'width' controls as it seems to be set pretty well from the factory. Definitely recommended to anyone looking for a 'grey box flanger', especially if the large enclosure and 18V requirements are deal breakers.

I’ve got the Edward flanger, and I love it, but this looks like a cool little pedal.

Re: NPD: MXR Micro Flanger

Do you still get a volume drop with the pedal engaged? It was something that frustrated me with the full size version.

I'm a fan of more is more in Flangers. I like the manual/width controls to go from chorus, to whatever.

But - if a spot of flanger in a small space does it for you - rock on!

I can't say that I noticed much of a volume drop on either this one or my previous full size MXR Flangers. I'm running them into the lead channel of a Marshall Jubilee, so it's possible that volume differences would be more apparent into something less dirty. The Micro Flanger is supposed to be a very similar circuit to it's larger brother, so I would expect volume output to likewise be similar.

My chorus needs are covered by a 1980 CE-2, so I don't really miss the manual / width controls.

I have had both MXR Flangers and I like the Mirco better. I do not remember it having the volume drop the larger unit had. It has been years since I plugged into one. Here is a clip of me with the Micro

Re: NPD: MXR Micro Flanger

The Micro Flanger is essentially the same pedal, but no EVH preset along with fixed manual and width controls.

That’s what the lady at the ticket booth said.

I have have one on my board for a few years now and I love it. Super simple and sounds great into the front of a dirty amp.
