I got a good deal on this at only 1.5x MSRP, which I figure isn't too crazy seeing as I don't buy nearly as much as I use to. The way I see it, it you subtract the cost of the gear I've gotten rid of so far this year, this was basically the cost of a normal Boss pedal

I've only had a chance to play this for about 5 minutes before I had to step out, but I'm really like it so far.

I'll review further once I test it out more

I was fascinated with these pedals when they fist came out (seemed to sound great in the videos I could find online) but the limited run meant I could never find one for a price that made me happy.

same, they look cool, but ive never been able to spend time with one. i love a good fuzzface and i like my soulbender, so hope to get to try one of these before to long

Are they particularly scarce? Why do they cost so much?

There's only 3000ish of them. The only difference between these and a normal tonebender is that the transistors fall in a really tight spec, they come with a voltage sag switch, and they have a switch that makes them play nice with buffers. Allegedly the transistors are some magical NOS transistor too. The main allure is that the specs are so tight that each one sounds exactly the same as any other, which is hard to do witb germanium.

The texture on the enclosure seems to be the same process they use to put texture on energy drink cans.

For those who don't know what's going on in a Tonebender MK2, it's a germanium Fuzz Face with another transistor boosting the input volume to hit the fuzzy part a little harder. As such the lowest gain level on the Attack control is about on par with the max level on a Fuzz Face.

I'm really liking the sound so far. Tone-wise it's like the missing link between a Fuzz Face and a Big Muff. It's rougher than my silicon FF, but it's smoother than my BMPs. Maximum Attack gets it to sound as gainy as a BMP but with better EQ and cleans up better with your volume control. A lot better note separation at high gain levels than I was expecting. The low end is a lot bigger than I would have expected from the circuit, and it cleans up on any setting just as well as a Fuzz Face.

The buffer/thru switch is a nice touch for if you don't plan on having it first in the chain or using it with active pickups.

The variable voltage control is pretty interesting, I haven't quite figured it out yet, especially because I need to change the volume control every time I use it to account for cognitive bias.

It's not transparent by any stretch, but it's not as opaque as a lot of fuzzes get. A Strat still sounds like a Strat, and my Custom Custom still sounds huge.

I can see why the resale value on these is so high. I wouldn't go out and buy one at the asking price on Reverb unless your either rolling in money or plan to use it constantly.

cool that it still cleans up like a ff, thats kinda critical for me. not that i plan on spending big $$$ on one of these, but i do hope one floats into my orbit for a bit to check out

Yeah, this thing is really cool. After playing with it all yesterday evening I think it's one of the few distortion boxes that I 100% like out of the box.

It's not unique enough a sound that I can't get something close to it with Fuzz Face and modded Rat (both of which I'd be more comfortable taking out the house), but having my favorite tones of those two pedals all in one box in a way that interacts with my guitar's volume and tone control extremely well is pretty valuable to me.
