NPD - The JB 8!

Re: NPD - The JB 8!

I just sold a JB8 on another forum, I was one of the non likers, just couldn't get along with it, to each his own I guess

Re: NPD - The JB 8!

The Blueman is indeed a major benefit to the forum and cool guy overall. He is somewhat opinionated on certain matters,,,particularly regarding the use of the A2 mag.

And 250k vol pots on the bridge pup.

But to be fair...I think we are all very opinionated about somethings...(oops, I meant to say "passionate").

Re: NPD - The JB 8!

After listening to oblique63's pickup comparisons (another post) I think I'm gonna give the JB another try. The standard A5 configuration is a classic sound, but I also really liked the clips with a ceramic magnet. The JB8 sound was more in-your-face than I expected, maybe a little too much for me. But I've got a bunch of magnets on hand, so why not try it?

It's definitely worth it to try! One thing about the JB8 though, it IS very in your face, but it is so in a pleasant matter, it cleans up quite nicely when rolling the volume pot down a bit, I suggest you give it a try. On the dirty channel, it's distortion heaven, it has all the scream of the original with an added midrange roar, and for a pickup this hot, it sounds very open and defined (at least in my guitar).

Side-note: AlNiCo tends to sound rounder/warmer, whereas Ceramic tends to sound more harsh/brighter. The A8 magnet is a ''bridge'' between the warmth and musicality of an AlNiCo magnet, and the attack and brightness of a Ceramic.

But as I said before, tone is all personal preference.

You're a quick learner.

Indeed! I have to read about things that interest me once or twice, and most of the time it keeps stuck in my head. Besides I always think it's good to be interested in learning new things. I also read a tonne of scientific magazines, which are very amusing and useful.
I guess I'm a bit of a geek compared to people my age.

You'll fit right in here. There's some really interesting new ideas that the members come up with. Have you tried any alternative wirings or push-pulls?

Re: NPD - The JB 8!

Actually my Mayones is already equiped with a push-pull (coil tap) system. So I've had it rewired, that the coil tap still functions with the JB 8. I don't really know if I'm totally happy with the push-pull system, but then again, how many times do I use it anyway? With the coil tap engaged, while the pickup selector is at the middle position, it sounds really thin, as in weak/thin. But when the pickup selector is at the middle position without the coil tap engaged, it sounds really interesting! It almost has this Telecaster twang in it which I like a lot.

Side-Note: The magnet is alligned properly, we checked the polarity, north is facing the slugside, and south is facing the screwside. :)

Re: NPD - The JB 8!

The JB8 is freakin' brutal. Been using one of a year in a Squier Strat, straight to the volume pot and then to the jack.
Sounds very detailed in the high end, more than I expected, while keeping some huge mids.
I'd love to have it in a hardtail Jackson or something like that.

I wouldn't use it for super tight sounds a la Meshuggah, but it just right for heavy power chords. Tons of low mids and mids.
I love playing stuff from Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning with it, it's right on it's ballpark!

It is a very raw and ballsy pickup, and it's really huge sounding indeed! The highs are less Icepick and more musical/rounder/warmer, while it still has incredible detail. As I said before, it has great note to note definition.
And open chords on it sounds like heaven :P!

About the Meshuggah part, I really love them! I have to disagree though about you mentioning, that it's not really suitable for that style of music. If you'd slam a Tubescreamer in front of your amp, set to boost only, NOT distort/overdrive (Level 100%, Tone to your liking, Gain at 0%), this will help tighten up the front end of your amplifier. Also If you'd slam a gate somewhere in there, and set it to cut (Not too hard ofc.), you'll get a really tight and choppy sound! I use this trick all the time, and basically have a TS in front of almost every amp ;) Just for that extra push!
