NPD: The Rabbit

Just got a Freakshow Effects "The Rabbit" last week. It's basically a RAT clone with some extra tricks. True bypass/LEDMine's aqua and black with blue knobs (really sweet looking).

The thing SCREAMS! It has a ton of gain on tap. I kept the volume at 9oclock and the drive at around 12. Filter knob I like at about 9 too. I like the switch to the left too, that seems to be the most balanced (the middle is boost mode, the right is a thicker overdrive 'LED' mode). I still need to experiment with it some more but I really dig it so far. I never got into RAT-type pedals before so it is a breath of fresh air.

I got so sick of the Xotic BB Preamp. I used it for years but now it just bores me to death. It sounds generic. I sold my AC Booster and took the RC Booster off of my board as well. Now I seem to be into more fuzzy/colored sounding pedals vs transparent distortion units. They have more character to me (at the moment). I put the Keeley Fuzz Head back on my board too set to a fuzz face-ish sound. The Rabbit is really aggressive and let's the rounder-sounding 335 punch right through.

Just some food for thought... Any thoughts on RAT clones/reissues/byoc etc would be appreciated!

Re: NPD: The Rabbit

I loved my late 90s rat I had. Pretty sweet pedal... don't know much about clones or anything...

Either way, Happy NPD bro!!

Re: NPD: The Rabbit

Cool pedal!

The reissue White Face Rat is cool but if you look hard you can find original rats for good prices too.

As for clones the Retro Sonic Distortion is a Rat clone and a good one and the Hartman LM308 Distortion is a Rat clone...I haven't tried the Hartman but base on my recent dealings with Hartman I would suggest any of his pedals!

My Hartman Compressor is really great and dealing with Theo was super smooth!

First thing i thought when i saw the thread title was that you'd housed a pedal circuit inside a well known marital aid.

Ah, I didn't know that the Retro Sonic was a Rat clone as well. I gotta check those out. I was really digging the 335 (w/bridge BB3) > (Trailer Trash Pedalboard) Rat clone > Verbzilla > Tweed Twin (jumped channels) tone I got at my last gig. Tons of sustain and it sounded so much punchier than the gigs I did this past year with the BB Preamp. I kinda like how the digital reverb smooths things out too (call it sacrilege hehe).

I just got a Barber Tone Press Compressor as well a few months ago (I gotta post pics of my updated pedalboard). A high school friend had one so I always played through it and liked the sound. I like it of course but I don't use it all too much. I'll find more of a use for it soon I'm sure.

HAHAH nice!

Re: NPD: The Rabbit

A Rat of any description is going to be more punchy than the BB Preamp; I don't think that's what the BB Preamp was designed to do. I can also see how the BB Preamp's neutrality can seem bland after a while.

Are you using the new pedal with the amp in your signature?

Re: NPD: The Rabbit

Compression can be hard to use w/o it ruining your tone but it can be done!

Sounds like you've got a smokin' rig going there brother!

Yeah I'll keep messing with it. And thanks man!

Yeah definitely. And yeah, I'm using the pedal in front of the '57 Tweed Twin-Amp and my Princeton Reverb copy as well. Works especially well with the Tweed amp. The Henriksen JazzAmp is my conservatory/practice room/archtop amp...
