NPD - This one sounds horrible

I've been looking for one of these for some very specific death metal sounds. One showed up today in a second hand sore nearby for next to nothing, so I snapped it up.

It sounds horrific.

Re: NPD - This one sounds horrible

It's useless for everything except the entombed Buzzsaw guitars and that classic Swedish Death metal sound.

It does that??

The old Entombed/Dismember/Sunlight Studio sound?

I want one.

Re: NPD - This one sounds horrible

Wow...The first stomp box I ever owned. Bought one at a pawn shop back in '90 for $10. I was uber rockin' (at least in my 14 year old mind) with that, a solid state Fender Champ amp, and a Squire Strat with a HB that looked like it was designed by DiMarzio with two sets of allen poles in the bridge. The only decent sound I was able to get out of it was Level at 12:00, Low at 1:30, High at 11:00, and gain at 3:00. That had a fairly decent scooped metal tone.

It sounds great as a goose through a starting to crunch 800 orplexi/mf. Sounds horrible by itself as sole source of gain.

Re: NPD - This one sounds horrible

Not true that you can't use them for sounds other than swedish chainsaw. It works as a boost with the dist way down, you can pump the lows, you can set it fairly modest and hit it with a TS and it does a more polished metal distortion. Justin Broadrick used one for a lot of Godflesh...

But yeah, the reason I own one is for juggling chainsaws.

The DOD American Metal is almost the same pedal, without separate EQ controls. I just bought the one off that n00b a few weeks back, it's messed up though. I'm gonna try my hand at modding that one.

I have one also, good times! I use it as a boost for my 5150 and set it into the Swedish EQ area for instant Dismember fun. :naughty:

I got less than stellar results trying to use it as a standalone device with the 5150 however. The best results were always Gain 0, level cranked to HELL (hehe), and EQ set to Chainsaw. This thread is inspiring me to break it out of the gear box. :thanks:

Yeah that's pretty much how I'm running it, just into a JMP.

Re: NPD - This one sounds horrible

LOL, I much prefer the LHP/Clandestine/Stranger Aeons Entombed to even Wolverine Blues, but especially over the later stuff. Most of it was recorded on a Peavey Bandit with an HM-2.

There's a lot of bands fiddling with that sound now, Rotten Sound, Trap Them, Black Breath, Nails... pretty much every grind band right now. The Secret probably uses it with the most originality at this point.

It's a badass pedal, can be hard to control set to chainsaw, I don't use a noise gate though.

Wolverine Blues is really the only Entombed album I listen to at all. The others either don't do anything that record doesn't already do better, or they do things other bands do better. WB was kind of the moment Entombed were really something unique (to me).

I don't get into a lot of the Swedish death metal.

For death metal bands, I like the stuff from Florida a lot more.

For Swedish bands, I like other styles of music.

Re: NPD - This one sounds horrible

I was huge into Entombed back then, WB was a huge letdown, to me. It started the departure from the chainsaw death metal sound and they started becoming more death n roll... back then I hated it. I like it more now, and to shoot also, but there aren't many songs like LHP or sinners bleed, both alltime classics to me.

What do I know, carcass' heartwork I didn't really like back then either, I wanted necroticism pt II.

Funny, the first thing I heard when I plugged it in and turned it up loud was a facsimile of the Black Breath sound. I'm pretty into them at the moment, probably because I wasn't there first time round.
