So while I was at school on Monday, a package arrived at my house from Georgia (much thanks to B_Bent, extremely easy to deal with!). I opened it up and lo and behold, my newest acquisition, a Vox Over the Top Boost!
I can't say enough about the versatility of this pedal. When I kick it on and turn down my guitar volume, the cleans actually improve. Of course, all the versatility in the world wouldn't mean anything if the pedal sounded like crap. But fear not - it's exactly what I wanted! The treble and bass controls are voiced excellently, and have a very wide sweep to them while retaining their musicality throughout. The tone controls are also very interactive - turning up the treble will have a big effect on the bass and mids, and vice versa. However, if this isn't your bag, a simple flick of the EQ switch will give the controls more independence.
I've never had a low gain pedal before, and it's an eye opening experience. It made me fall in love with low-gain again. Plus, this thing behaves more like a great amp than my actual amp. It's incredibly responsive to both picking dynamics and guitar volume changes, and I LOVE boosting it with my Keely-modded TS-9.
Another feature that I love is the cut control. It's basically a treble cut, but it's placed later in the circuit than the other tone controls so as to not muddy up your tone. It's true - throughout the entire sweep of the pot, it doesn't muddy up at all.
From the moment I plugged it in (all controls flat) I knew it was a keeper. Even with everything at noon, it was musical, dynamic, and plain RAWK. One of the most versatile pedals I've ever used by far - you can do most any style of guitar music recorded through the late 70's. And boosting it with the tube screamer was just balls to the walls, take no prisoners rock and roll. The mid hump of the TS worked especially well with the OTTB - I'd feel comfortable playing most anything with those two pedals and a tuner.
I really can't say enough about this pedal - for the time being, I've decided that I don't need a new amp. I'll just ride this one until it dies and then get my Bassman - and when I do, I'll have an awesome pedal to use it with.
PS: I just ordered an MXR MC 404 wah last night, and I'm contemplating getting either a Devi Ever Torn's Peaker or a ZVex BoR. Keep an eye out for my reviews on those.
