NPD!

I've wanted an MXR Classic Overdrive for a while now. I had a Wylde OD for a while, but mine didn't have the switch for the GT-OD on the board so I sold it. I've been half looking for a Classic OD since then and yesterday I found one. There was a guy listing one for 60 on the local craigslist, I offered 40 and we settled on 45, so I'm happy with that.

Now I just need to mod it to make that switch external. I know some people here have done that. Any suggestions? The drummer in my band has the equipment to drill the hole and solder the switch, but I need to know what kind of switch to use, and what size hole. Any input is appreciated!

Re: NPD!

Nice! I just got one from Jolly a few days ago and in my limited experience with it, I like it a lot.

I believe you should be able to use any SPST switch, and then just check the mounting requirements for said switch to figure out what size hole to drill.

Re: NPD!

I modded my green one with a micro (not mini) toggle from Radio Shack. The mini was too big.

I didn't do the switch mod on my cream one. That one is in ZW mode from the factory and I have it set up as a slightly dirty volume boost.

Which color did you get?

Re: NPD!

Mine is the cream one. I like the idea of having the switch be external, but I have a feeling that it will stay in the ZW mode most of the time.

Re: NPD!

Zakk Wylde OD and GT-OD. The major difference is in the EQ curve. If I'm not mistaken, the Wylde has a flatter EQ and the GT-OD a more traditional TS curve.

Re: NPD!

see if you actually need both sounds. I prefered the gt sound in every way rather than the zw.

I know I like the Wylde OD from previous experience, so the question will be how useful I find the GT-OD setting. I'll probably just mod it regardless since my drummer has the stuff (other then the switch).

Re: NPD!

You know what would be cool, a Fulldrive type "boost" footswitch that gooses the gain and flips the mode.

Believe it or not, the ZW mode has less gain and is brighter.

Re: NPD!

I hadn't realized it was that different from the GT-OD. The Wylde is definitely a bit more my style then. When I had a Wylde OD before, I used it either as a boost (Volume 1:00, gain 8:30, tone 11:00) for the drive channel on my old Lonestar or to provide some crunch on the clean channel (everything at 11:00 +/- a few degrees). Both sounds were really good.

Oh course, my tastes, style and equipment have all changed since then, so who knows which I will prefer now.

I did find that I preferred the GT when I had mine. The ZW makes sense though because he pretty much just pushes his amps and the OD is just for a tiny bit extra.

That's how I use my cream one. It's in ZW mode, volume maxed and gain down low.
