NSD - Celestion A-Type

Securb

One of Jerry's Kids
I just ordered a set of Celestion A-Type speakers for my '72 Quad Reverb today. I have Celestion Seventy 80s in there right now and they sound really good. I am going to move those to my Fender FM 412. I am hoping for a more vintage tone out of the Celestion A-Type. Since buying the Marshall I don't really use the Fender for metal anymore. I might as well move the Fender back a little close to spec.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

I put one in my DRRI a couple of months back, and I guess the jury is still out. It replaced a 40-watt alnico-mag Jensen, which was beautiful, but afraid of distortion and fuzz sometimes.

PROS: Volume, can handle overdrive, distortion, dirt, all that, like a champ. Punches above its weight-class. Authoritative.
CONS: Probably not as "pretty" if you're doing a lot of clean playing.

Depends on where your head is at any given moment.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

Cool thanks for the feedback. I use my JC120 if I am doing mega-cleans these days. This amp is an 85 lbs, 4x12, boat anchor that doesn't really fit in my car. It will only be used for basement jams and my own enjoyment. Based on your feedback I think I can find a sweetspot in the lineup for it.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

You may very well like it. It's clearly designed for Fenders. The "A" stands for American, so take that for what it's worth.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

As in a lot of new Celestion speakers the A-type takes forever to break in so hang in there..I have one and tried mixing with a V30 and that didn't work out, have it loaded in a 1-12" now but I don't like it..its for sale if anyone wants it..its the 8 ohm version and it has about 5 hours on it max.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

I just got shipping confimation today. Long story but they should be here soon! I am going to do an overhaul on the Fender removing a bright switch mod I didn't like and putting the original preamp glass back in.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

Long story but the speakers just landed. I am going to hopefully install them this week and pull the head to reverse a bright switch mod I did I don't like.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

I forgot what a pain in the sack a speaker swap is. I am taking a break for lunch. I still have to put the Seventy 80s I took out of the Quad in the FM412 cab.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

half way there...

Whoa ho living on a prayer.

Got it all done. There is a snap to the speakers that is awesome. They also break up a lot quicker than the Jensens. I am actually getting overdrive out of the Fender if I futz with the master volume a bit. I would call it early 60's Brittish Invation type of dirt. It is cool as heck.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

I've decided to keep mine in my Deluxe. It hasn't knocked my socks off, but the A has consistently delivered.

Celestions in Fenders just work. I have a G10 Alnico Gold in my Princeton. Feels like cheating.

Re: NSD - Celestion A-Type

I have 1 A-type and it sounds good but I need a better 1×12" cabinet, and like the 2 V-types I have the A-type takes some time to get it broken in.

The link worked for me.

Pain in the sack....Hernia acting up?

Leave some speakers cone-up/cone-out with loose magnetic screws in the vicinity?

Or just forget to remove speakers in right order and began the joyous process pulling tubes?

Btw, wasnt Atype a newish model? Wasn't aware Celestion had any new-better-than-old product development since the early 80s, are they really back in the saddle? Or is it just a cheaper, mildly bastardized version of something from the usual suspects list?

PS if I were you, I'd have raided a beater 80s cab off craigslist for $100-200 for oldies but goodies from the UK days instead of dropping $400+ on these things... and probably reloaded the OEMs into the scavengee cab, then flipped it back for net profit or zero sum
