NSD...Eminence

Finally got some speakers for my old Traynor 2x12 cab that goes with my Reverbmaster head. Can't remember why I chose these two, but I had good reasons.

The amp sounds fantastic through these speakers. It's loud and clean, very little breakup with the master on five and the volume dimed. The speakers seem to compliment the amp well...they are not overly bright, but I wouldn't call them dark, either. Just right, I guess!

The amp takes my distortion pedal (visual sound) well, and sounds pretty massive when cranked. Again, the speakers work well here.

The one thing that didn't work was my MXR Classic OD...definitely way too much midrange. I'm going to need to find a more "transparent" (how cliche') overdrive for this amp. The Classic OD works well with my other Traynor (YCV40), but the voicing of the ol' Reverbmaster does not jive with this pedal.

The tone coming out of this speaker cab was so good, even my 6 year old went goggly-eyed over it:

Bottom line: Great speakers. Seem quite versatile.

Re: NSD...Eminence

What style of music? Those Wizards are REALLY loud speakers. 104 dbs I think.
Is the cab ice pikey at all? It is all top end and midrange punch? Or does it sound reasonable thick in the lows?

One of the reasons I picked these speakers was because of the db rating. I wanted LOUD speakers that wouldn't break up too much.

For fun I play everything from Priest to James Brown, but the band I'm in plays mainly r&b, blues, a few country tunes...basically a bar band.

This set up has no ice pick qualities at all. The Reverbmaster head has a ton of low end...too much really. I've got the bass knob set on 2 or 3 and the treble on 6, mids 5 or so. I'd call the whole rig "warm" sounding...not Fendery at all, but not dull sounding either. I've never had the opportunity to play a Marshall, but seeing as how this amp barely breaks up, I doubt it could be called "Marshally". Have not tried it with single coils yet.

I guess I should try and post a sound clip...

Is your daughter from Innsmouth?

Gonna have to read the story now. Haven't read any Lovecraft for a while...

Re: NSD...Eminence

I believe those speakers are loud and really good sounding combination together. i am going to opossite way, but with similar combination to your Eminence. i have 1x12 orange cab with Celestion V30 in it. than i have Blackheart Handsome Devil 15 watter tube amp combo. so in that combo i'll put another Celestion G12H30.. the rating of both speakers is 100 db. but i will have 60 watts of power combining those two together, because Vintage 30 is 60w, and G12H30 is 30w. so from each combo 30 watts. if i wouldn' already have the Vintage 30, which is keeper, i love its sound, i would go the same combinations of 2x12 like you: so the eminence wizard and governor. but as i want to keep Vintage 30, and that's a good combination i will go Celestions versions of it !

Was just a poor joke; if you reread it, when you get to the bit about the bus driver, it will make more sense ... :)

I had to google it to figure out what you were talking about. Found some pics.... I have not read that particular Lovecraft story, so it will be new to me!

Re: NSD...Eminence

That's the combo of speakers I'm thinking about for my oversized 2x12 cab. Glad you like them.

You do have me concerned that I won't like them when you said this though: "definitely way too much midrange". Would you say that's down to your amp or the speakers?

Both amps I use are quite mid heavy so I don't want a speaker that's too OTT with mids. Although I do currently use a pair of V30s and find them to be ok, I just want to try something new.

Not to go too far afield, but it's one of his best! Enjoy!

That's a good question. I could do a little experiment over the weekend: I have a C-Rex in my YCV40 that I could do an a/b test using the both amps and both speakers. Might get some useful info out of that. If I can figure out how to do a decent recording of it, I will.

Re: NSD...Eminence

Great choice of speakers and congratulations. I don't know if I've heard that particular model of Traynor, but I'd like to hear your rig. Post some audio soon.

I would disagree on the way too much midrange thing. I think that's more a function of what's pushing it. If I remember right, you're running that Soldano clone that Toe-Knee built, right? I've got a Jet City pushing mine, which is obviously Soldano voiced, and it's great. I had two Governors running before, and the Wizard fixed every gripe I had about that pair. I guess the main problem was a bit of a lacking bottom end, but now I have more than enough, and that's with a 20-Watt amp.

I can't speak highly enough of the pair.

Re: NSD...Eminence

Yeah, ^^^^^^^ that has been my experience with the Wiz/Gov combo. The Wiz really takes off in the Low end, has a "normal" Mid response, and then has a strong Upper response.
The Gov has always kind of sounded the opposite to me.....a very Smooth yet Pronounced Mid, and a very "normal" amount of Lows and Highs. They work well together, and for a wide range of musical tastes.
I rebuilt two SF Twins, both from 1969. Did the same BF mods to both amps and installed the Wiz/Gov in each amp. I sold one of the amps to a Jazz/Be-Bop snob, and the other Twin went to Blues-Rock lead player.
The jazz guy brought a small pedal board with a compressor and delay.
The Rocker brought a board with a few Screamers, Delay, Vibe and a Fuzz of some sort. They both commented on how well the speakers seemed to jive with their playing and pedals. All you can ever really do is to give it a try for yourself.
good luck

Good memory!

I use the SLO with 1 band and a Splawn Quick Rod with my other band and both amps are quite thick in the mids so I was concerned there may be too much happening.

I've only come across 1 view against the Wizard from another former Splawn owner so I may just have to bite the bullet and see for myself.

Re: NSD...Eminence

I've been doing some experimenting today, comparing different tones with my C.Rex and the Gov/Wiz combo. The one thing that is giving me issues is the oversize cab is fairly "boomy". I've been reading that adding batting to the inside will help with that. Tomorrow I'm headed to the craft store for some poly fill and see how that works/changes things.

And Brow, there is no speaker-related issues with the mids. It's the amp/pedal combo and the specific settings of those. Hopefully I'll have a SDUGF-worthy sound-clip done sometime tomorrow.

Yes, but you will need to add quite a bit, like 4" worth of batting; Alternatively you can use an EQ in front of the amp and scoop out some of the 400-450Hz area; that will clean up a lot of mud.

Ideally, you will probably want to add something like Auralex studio foam.

Re: NSD...Eminence

Very lovely daughter, but there's just something weird looking about her...can't quite put my finger on it.
