NSD!

New Speakers Day! After about a two week wait, my new set of Webers arrived today. I'm replacing the stock Italian Jensen P10R's in my '59 Bassman LTD because they're just not the right speaker for that amp. After asking Weber for advice, CJ recommended a combo of two 10A125's for the top and two 10F150's for the bottom. I had been waiting for a pedal of mine to sell on eBay and it finally did so I pulled the trigger!

Here's the old speakers (how dreary looking)

Unboxing! Ooooh! Unfortunately those very nice bell covers had to be removed in order for the speakers to fit behind the amp chassis.

3/4 done!

Here's what the cone side looks like. Got them all with light dope.

All in!

And now with the chassis back in and wired up.

I got the gold frames because... Well, just because. Weber will do a whole bunch of colour options and I figured gold looks kinda classy next to the tweed. Don't ask me how they sound because I haven't tested them yet! It's after 1am and the wife and baby are asleep upstairs. Soon... Soon... :)

The other thing of note is that the new speakers added a fair amount of weight to the amp. Especially those ceramic magnets! Those bad boys are heavy!

Ok just tested them out. They sound beautiful! Cleans are much rounder and warmer. When pushed into breakup it still sounds warm whereas the Jensens would get harsh and required re-EQing as you turned up.

Re: NSD!

I was wondreing about the load. My Bassman 70 is 4 ohm. I bet after a little breakin period your new speakers will really shine. Congrats.

Re: NSD!

Good stuff!

I'm not into the 10F150...I like the 125 much better personally but the 150 is still a great speaker!

I'm sure that is MUCH better than the Jensens...I know a lot of folks dig 'em but I ain't one of them!

Re: NSD!

Did the sticker fall off the back of one of the Alnicos?

I think the mix of the two speakers together is supposed to be an amazing balance from what I've been told. The Alnicos up top will be warmer and compress at higher volumes. The ceramics on the bottom will give more punch, bass, and clarity in the high end. These are the first ceramic mag speakers I've had in any of my amps so it will be interesting to see how they work out. So far, the amp sounds sublime. It's like it's not even the same amp as before.

And I managed to sell off those Jensens within hours of posting them on my local Kijiji. Got $200 for the entire set, so recovered half of what I spent on the Webers!

Re: NSD!

I do a mix like that in my V Front tweed Super...one 10A100T and one 10F125 and i liek the 10A125's too but I find the 10F150's a bit too much for most amps...but thats just my personal opinion!

I can tell you for sure than the ceramic/alnico mix is the real deal!

Re: NSD!

This entire amp is a bit much for most situations!

But yeah, I could see how you could feel that way. I was concerned before ordering them that the 10F150 might be too much as I didn't really want louder (more efficient) speakers in this thing. However, the volumes seem about the same as where they were before so it's not bad. Plus with the combo, the 10A125's start to break up sooner while the 10F150's stay cleaner - so you get this cool clean/overdriven tone. At any rate, I turned it up for a few minutes and with either the Jensens or the Webers this amp is still loud as hell. Big difference now is that it doesn't sound harsh when I turn it up. Those Jensens would get raspy very quick - to the point where I'd have to reach for the treble control right away. Now, the Webers just get sweeter as they get louder. The breakup tone is awesome! Plus those 10F150's have a very tight and focused low end punch. I only wish I could run the amp that hot.

Re: NSD!

But really, changing speakers is to amps what changing pickups is to guitars. It still surprises me how much of a tonal change there is going from one to another.
