NTD: New Tranny Day :)))

Re: NTD: New Tranny Day :)))

Hammond?? I got those in my old Traynor YBA-1... I'm not even sure what transformers do exactly but happy new Transformers day!

:)

Thanks.

Transformers are essential parts in tube amps. They affect the overall tone, power, compression, saturation, eq... Of course, along with tubes and critical caps, and the particular topology chosen.

These are trannies that can be used in Blackface type of amps. I have chosen to go with the Vibro output tranny, 35W. Not the bassman this time (45W) because I am seriously thinking of running this with 2 6V6's at half power, sorta lite 22W without lacking body. So this'd be a lite Blackface Deluxe Reverb with some extra muscle in terms of body (not gain). But then again, knowing that I could switch to 5881's or 6L6's is also cool.

BTW Hammond is quite a good brand when it comes to transformers. Mercury trannies are sorta too expensive for those of us who don't buy it in bulk quantities. Heyboer's are cool, indeed my favorites, but the shipping charges from the states to here are insane, and them trannies are expensive you know... Classic Tone's are also good, many say. Anyways, I have used Hammonds before, and they are dependable. Very solid and cool transformers. The only downside is that they don't have this historical accuracy concern that Mercuries and Heyboers have.

Hammonds are supposed to be more audiophile fwiw.

I really liked the Single ended 10w hammond OT I had in my epi valve jr. before the baby will conversion.

If I ever have the time or $$$ to build an amp from scratch I'm gonna use hammond transformers. For my tastes high sound quality is more important than historical accuracy.

Hammond makes lots of different trannys, ive used them in a few amps and they've always sounded good
